How do others know what they are going to Photograph ?

Seem to be stuck in a rut at the moment where I desperately want to take more photo's, but have no idea what to shoot. I end up driing placeslooking for inspiration but to no luck

Must admit the fortnightly theme has inspired me to go out & take some shots. Have some, but have anidea of a better one to take.

So how do others decide what to photograph ? Help a photographer get his fix

Re: How do others know what they are going to Photograph ?

Hmmm, photographers block!!!!
When I suffer from this I will go out to a place where I have taken some good shots before and re-shoot, the light will be different, try different angles ,low, high, macro, think black and white and shoot with the express intention of converting to b & w.

Re: How do others know what they are going to Photograph ?

I think every photographer goes through these phases. for me I sometimes do as Orangepeel has suggested and look at other photos for inspiration or I attempt something that I might not normally take, indoor work, flower photography or anything that is unusual for me...as I don't normally photograph certain subjects it is all fairly new to me so I don't suffer from the 'block' as much. It doesn't always mean I get good shots though, although I usually learn something this way.

Hope that helps

That's one way of doing it !!

I find as I drive around I'm always on the lookout for sujbjects / landscapes to photograph, with the aim to return in the future to photograph. Doesn't always work though. Last few times I went to a skate park & found it empty & last 2 attempts at catching this darn steam train have ended up with me looking at an empty track

Saying that I did spot the old gate with lock on the way back from one unsuccessful shoot, so it turned out OK in the end..... I suppose

Re: How do others know what they are going to Photograph ?

I have 'photographers block' on a regular basis. I bought quite a useful book from a secondhand bookshop called 'The Photographers Project Book' by Jeanne Griffiths for about £1, which has some great ideas and suggestions for... projects It has some good ideas and inspiration in there.

Which ideas/suggestions did you find best out of interest ?

Re: How do others know what they are going to Photograph ?

There are lots of quite interesting projects in there, but the ones I seem to have done the most on is 'pattern in nature' and 'view from a window'. The book gives you time scales to work on, which has been really useful. For example, the view from a window can be done over a year - it's been really interesting recording the changing scenery with the seasons

Other projects are:
A day at the races
Pattern in architecture
Group activities (use your own imagination for this one )
Local Industry
Town and country animals
A craftsman at work
Take one tree
Shadows and silhouettes
Bad weather (we get plenty of it!!)
An event
Windows and doors
A day in the park
The way it looks today
Abstract form
Early morning
Communication
Pattern in nature
Street art
Market day
Shapes and symbols
Views from a window
Primary colours
A day in the life
My street
Reflections

Phew.... There you go Mick - should give you plenty to get your teeth into now

Often times walking away from my camera for a week or two, will have me craving and full of wacky ideas.
