How do you produce a HDR image?

Hi, can anyone please inform me how you produce a HDR shot? I have seen a few on this site and love the feel and texture like view they give off, do you require software?
Best Wishes

Re: How do you produce a HDR image?

If you buy the book High Dynamic Range by Ferrell McCollough you can find out all about HDR.

Basically you need to make multiple exposures and combine using special software. The effect you describe is produced in the tone mapping by local adjustment of contrast. Photomatix is one of the most popular HDR software packages and is reasonable easy to use and versatile.

Re: How do you produce a HDR image?

Download the trail version for free its a piece of cake to use, however when the image is done there is a "Photomatix" water mark in the picture you can clone it out in editing software the full blown package obviously doesnt leave this mark although i think its about 60, Certainly a good bit of software thou, You can also do it in CS3 although ive never tried and use photomatix, Some scenes look better in HDR than others you will find

Re: How do you produce a HDR image?

I also recommend downloading Photomatix as a trial version. I experimented with this for some time comparing with CS3. However, CS3 does not have the clever local contrast enhancement found in Photomatix so is much more limited. After about 6 months of experiment, I paid my 60 to Photomatix and think it has been well worth it.

Re: How do you produce a HDR image?

I use the photomatix plug in in CS2 for the tone mapping part and just use CS2 for the HDR.

Its nice to see people know the difference between HDR and Tone mapping which on one of the forums i am on no one seems to understand!!

Re: How do you produce a HDR image?

Now would be a perfect time to explain it to us all samnooshka =)
I just bought photomatix last night.. then realized I don't really have anything to practice on other than single raw files (no mult exposures yet).

Good thing I have the entire day to study, take a final, and waste time playing with my camera =)
