How does HE do it?

Okay I never thought I would do this, but after looking and looking and looking at his pictures for so long I just can't figure it out. How does he do it? His lighting seems like it has a magical touch to it. I am sure it is not only because of his DOF, I have shot at very shallow DOF as well and in some very nice out door places at sunrise and sunset, but I don't quite get the same FEEL in my light as his. Anyone has any others? Sorry for making you folks go offline to look at his flickr site.

Thank you

Re: How does HE do it?

Don't know about DOF (saw no evidence of that in the shots I looked at) but, if I've got this right, you're talking about the misty/dreamy quality?

Don't get me wrong, you've got to have the composition/subject right (and so have an idea what the finished image will look like) and get a relatively evenly lit scene but then just alter the levels (make the blacks lighter)

Took this a couple of years ago and have just spent 10 mins altering levels and generally making it misty - it wasn't taken with that intention but it's a fairly well lit sunrise shot that lends itself fairly well to removing the Black Point and shifting the blacks lighter

Re: How does HE do it?

Its all about taking the picture at the right time and exposing the picture correctly the rest is done on on of the editing programmes that the photographer uses, some are to do with DOP or the photographer has one of those special lenses, however the finished results are really good and thats all that matters......

Re: How does HE do it?

Right place, right time & some post processing in Photoshop

I haven't done that many landscapes, but here is examples of mist I took in my Mono stage
