How many people leave their screen protectors on ?

Having just unpacked my nice new camera I suddenly noticed the screen protector in place. Just wondered how many people actually leave theirs in place ? Must admit I took mine straight off the D70 & never experienced any scratches over the last 2 years

Dave

The D70 one looks tacky being clear plastic but it's still on my D70 albeit painted black

Re: How many people leave their screen protectors on ?

I did get a couple of small scratches on my 10d so I have a protector on my 5d now, I bought some from a company in the us called Boxwave who make really clear ones for a number of devices, I'd always used them on my PDA and just bought some for the camera one day when I was ordering.

Re: How many people leave their screen protectors on ?

No screen protector here, canon don't supply them as standard on my camera and in the last 5 years I have not yet managed to scratch it at all. I would howvere probably leave it on if it had come supplied with one (depending on how it looked )

Re: How many people leave their screen protectors on ?

I have left the screen protectors on both my camera and mobile phone, just as an added precaution against scratches,I also found earlier this year in my local jessops a packet of repacement protectors that you can cut to size and apply to your LCD screen if the one suppiled gets damaged. I cannot be certian but I belive that it cost about £6.00 for 3 sheets but far cheaper {IMO} than trying to get the LCD screen replaced.

Re: How many people leave their screen protectors on ?

I use my one, although I've often thought of using one of my thin-film screen protectors for my pocket PC, cut down from full size. I guess that I'd get about 3 out of one pocket PC film.

Re: How many people leave their screen protectors on ?

Well I take the view they spend all this money making a camera look asthetically pleasing to the eye, only to wack a piece of cheap plastic over the top. Used to think the same of people years ago, who used to order a specific interior for their new car & then stick ghastly seat covers over them

Sorry, it's coming off ......got to have it looking its best

Just reading through the manual last night & it states the protector is to be used when camera is stored only ...hmmm...so they don't expect you to use it out in the field

I can see in the future {with the escalating prices of new models of cameras}the next information manuals will state "Please insure this camera is stored in its box at all times"

Mine never come off the D200 or D70, I'd rather replace the plastic protector than the screen.

Re: How many people leave their screen protectors on ?

I use cut down PDA screen protectors - and even put them on the smaller LCD screen on top. But then I'm sad like that!
But I'll also say that the protectors get a hard time, not the screens!

Re: How many people leave their screen protectors on ?

This thread got me thinking a little

I have never broken or scratched any of the screens on my cameras and although I do treat them with respect they do get used a lot. I have only ever read of one case where someone had actually broken his screen on the back of a 10D (I think it was) and it cost him about $20 for a replacement that he fitted himself.

How many of members have either scratched or damaged their LCDs under normal use? Are screen protectors really required or is it much the same argument as with Skylight filters and lenses?

Steve
I do except what you say and with the price of some cameras these days treating them with respect is 2nd nature but as we all know accidents can and do happen.
I ask in all honesty is the look of the camera {to others} more important or is the protection of a valuable item more important.

Re: How many people leave their screen protectors on ?

I definitely keep a protector on mine. There is a company called CrocFol who do superb ones that really are crystal clear and they are made for specific cameras so they fit down to the millimetre and look excellent.... in that you can't see them at all and the screen looks even better than without them as they help avoid external reflections.

You can find them on Ebay easily enough, usually posted from Germany. I got a pack of three (three for rear screen and three for the top all in the pack) and amstill on the first one I put on a year later which suggests they are excellent value for money. I paid about £6 inc postage so gotta be worth it rather than run the risk of a scratch.

I personally don't like using PDA protectors on my 20D, I did try it once. The prob is, those are designed to take hard wear from a stylus writing on the touch screen and they are not as clear as others. I keep one on my Dell Axim 51v which I never go anywhere without but I would always stick to the Crocfol ones for my camera.

Maybe I am just a careless git so need to be more cautious than most!

Cheers, Rob

Thats an interesting post Rob. As I am in Germany I will look into finding a supplier for these and maybe if they are cheaper than the ones on Ebay I could ack as a middle man for Pixalo members if there is anyone interested?

I've just checked out the web-site, and on the first page of 9+ there are foils listed for for the D50 and D80 listed.
Also Canon 300D, 30D
Fuji S9500, Finepix S2 Pro

Pentax ist DL

Did a search for D70s and D200 and found them.

Re: How many people leave their screen protectors on ?

Well, i've got the screen protectors. Ordered on the 13th and delivered on the 18th.

First, I was a little disappointed to find that there were only six protectors for the LCD back screen and none for the top plate screen. Screen protectors for other models include both.

Second, as I suspected, when the film is applied, it is impossible to get an 'invisible fix'. I mean that no matter how much you clean the screen to start, and how carefully you apply the film you can see what appears to be a mass of bubbles with the light hitting it from the same side as you. However, when the LCD is in use and backlit, they are invisible.

So, are they worth it? The only other option (other than keeping the supplied screen protector on) is to cut down some PDA screen protectors. This will give you more films for your money, I guess that you'd be able to cut out 3 from the average PDA sized film, but you would have to use a scalpel to get a clean cut, and use some sort of template to get the shape right. Of course, you could just cut out a square that is oversize and slap it on, but does that defeat the original object of keeping the camera looking good?

I'll keep and use the rest of these films, but would I buy any more? Probably not. Would I try the cut down PDA film? Maybe. Would I use the supplied protector? Yes.

The choice is yours.

(Crew - does this count as a review? )

Re: How many people leave their screen protectors on ?

I have just bought a pack of Crocfol protectors for my Canon 20D and they are an excellent price: £4.82 inc postage and packing. That price is for SIX pairs, ie 6 for the back screen and 6 for the top screen, all exactly sized to the millimetre.

I have been using these for a while and they are superb, very clear and easy to apply.

The actual price is €6.99 so if buying from Germany like Steve or whatever, you'll be used to all that Euro stuff. I am pleased to say i am not LOL. The postage is included in the price so nothing extra is added.

At 80p a set, these are outstandingly good value in my opinion and they do them for the same price for Nikon D70, D80, D200, Canon 300D, 350D, 400D, 30D, etc.

If you go to Ebay and search for the SELLER: M-I-B-Commerce and then look on his shop, you will be able to find them. They will probably be listed in French but not hard to understand!

Hope that helps,

Rob :o)

ps, Steve, that has SURELY gotta be a review

Rob - that is where I got mine from. I think they are OK, but they look a mess when the LCD is not on. Do you manage to get the flim to go on without it looking like you've got the contents of a hoover bag under it?

Hi Dab, yes, I have always managed to put it on without any real problem. I will tell you what I do, just in case it is different to you. You never know, it might help.

This method is the way I do it for all protector application, e.g. my PDA, my mobile phone, etc.

I first take the battery out of the camera. That might sound daft but read on, you'll see why.

Then in a reasonably dust-free environment I place the camera down on my work service so that it's stable and not rocking at all. KEY POINT: After giving the screen a good wipe with cleaner (I use the same Eclipse solution I have for sensor cleaning) I touch near the screen with one hand and the radiator with my other hand. This is to earth any static that has built up on the surface of the screen and DOES make a difference when trying to put the protector on.

This bit might sound pernickerty but I hope it will make sense: I hold the protector between my thumb and middle finger and apply light pressure to the top of the film with my index finger, This makes a slight arc upwards and stops the film wanting to drop downwards before I am ready. Earthing the screen will also ensure the film is not drawn to the screen. Without earthing, I find it is a bit like have 'Snap to Grid' turned on when using PS!

Now that you are holding it like so, line up the left corner furthest away from you (assuming right handed) just a couple of millimetres above the screen surface. Place the corner down as accurately as possible focusing on getting the two edges (side and top) squared. Lay the rest of the protector down by 'rolling' the film so that it doesn't trap any air underneath it. You can use a cloth to help expel any air as you go. I do NOT advise using a piece of card as a squeegee as this tends to give lines across the protector and also scratches the surface of it.

Ok, that is my method and whilst it might seem a bit clinical, it works well for me so i offer it here in the hope you will find it successful too.

Cheers,
Rob
