Question How Many Picture till the Right One

I was wondering how many pictures (on average) you take before you get the right/best one of a certain subject.

It depends on a lot of factors, sometimes you only have one chance to get the shot. If it is a set up shot I like to think about it first to try and get it right in as few shots as possible, I find it helps with learning.

Re: How Many Picture till the Right One

If it's hand held, I always take acouple extra if I like the shot, then from different angles, this is embressing, but I am into the 5th year of shooting and I only just for the past couple of years really stopped getting alot of blurry shots, like the first 2 years, it seems half of my shots were bad from something, that has gone way down from what Hacker says,,,Learning...and I still have a long way to go,,,but that's the fun for me....

I find now that I'm probably getting about 75-80% keepers but it wasn't always like that

Re: How Many Picture till the Right One

When I used to shoot film, I was really good at 'catching the moment', particularly when it was going to be the sort of shot where there would be no chance of getting a second chance. I had a very high percentage of 'keepers'.

Since I've gone digital, I do find I'm more likely to Take more shots than before, trying different angles and bracketing, and inevitably, the ratio of keepers has gone down.

I'm not sure how to judge the results. Although it could be argued that the more modern technique is more 'wasteful', although, of course, there really is no wastage in digital imaging, there is a higher chance of getting a really good/different image that you might not have got being more precise in the shooting.

Re: How Many Picture till the Right One

It depends on what I'm shooting - it might be as high as 90%+ where I'm in total control of the shoot, or as low as 15% for fast paced, low light action where I need to manually focus - like the UFC 70 event that I shot.

What matters the most in analysing your "keeper to duff" ratio is understanding exactly why the bad shots turned out that way and knowing what you could have done to prevent them from going wrong... assuming there's anything you could do, that is.

Re: How Many Picture till the Right One

Well I am not sure what you mean by right. I take pictures for competitons and it pays to take several shots of a subject. Also you may need to visit a location to learn about it and find the best time of day then go back at the optimum time. So my measure is how many shots do I process ready for printing (a potential competiton entry). When using film my hit rate was about 10% which seemed to be about normal for Club photographers. Since changing to a digital camera 2 years ago my hit rate is still 10%. I actually take twice as many pictures but the output is also double. Throwing away 90% of what I take does not sound good but it does not mean that the 90% were technically wrong but that I had a better shot and I am only likely to use one of a single subject. I have been told by better photographers than me that the selection of the best shot from those taken is the key to success. Many photographer may have some gold but not recognise it.
