Howdy :)

Hello,
I'm new! I was very fortunate this Christmas to get a new camera. It's a Canon Digital Rebel XT. The little experience I have is mostly with my Canon Powershot S2 IS, so going to a DSLR there are a lot of different things about the camera. I got the kit, and I also received a 75-300 Canon lens. I think I'd like to take it back (75-300), and get a different one (or the same one for less money). I'm not sure about lenses, in what I want, and in what I should probably get. I'll be using my camera for many different things, so I guess what I buy has to be fairly versatile, and is a very good lens for my money, as I am 20 and have no income of any kind. My favorite things to take pictures of are landscapes, and nature, including both wide angle shots and macros, or more accurately, everything under the sun. Also, I don't really know a whole lot on using my new camera too, though I do know a little bit. I'm currently reading the manual, etc. I guess I'm just looking for a bit of help all the way around, in what to do, look at, and maybe some help on some lenses; I'm pretty new to this.

Any help is greatly appreciated; thank you!

Brandon

P.S. If anybody'd like to look at my previous work, please let me know, though don't tell me that I didn't warn you because it was so crappy! :P

Welcome to Pixalo Brandon

You have a good basic kit there. The lenses cover a good range of focal lengths so you ought to have something for any situation.

If you like nature shots, the long end of the 75-300 lens will be very useful, so I would not rush to return it.

As you become more familiar with the kit you have, you will find limitations. It is then you can think about expanding the lenses you have, and get them to the attention of Santa, or anyone who will be buying you birthday gifts.

Using lenses with long focal lengths is a skill, and macro is probably the most difficult, so I think you would do best by starting off using your new kit rather like your old Powershot, then pushing out from that base.

If you want any feedback on your pictures, post them up in the gallery or the sharing forum. The critique forum is for more detailed comment on one picture.

There is a guide on how to post pictures here.

Finally, if you want to know anything, just ask. No-one here will put you down or think that you ought to know stuff already.

Dabhand16, thank you very much! I'm thinking I'll keep the 75-300, but I want to return it because I've found it much cheaper elsewhere. I love my powershot, it has some really good macro, and just all around is a great camera, it is very veristile, and I still plan on taking it with me any time I bring my DSLR bag. Thanks for the tips on the forum boards, too!
