Humbled tonight

Just returned from Cheltenham Camera club tonight, where we were lucky enough to have a lecture from Peter Gennard. MFIAP EFIAP/p, who shared some of his prints.

In this eventful night we were shown some prints that had achieved Gold Awards at International Competition level. As Peter shoots Nikon, what DSLR do you think created some of these shots & Peter still uses to this date. Was it a 2K D2X ..... nope. OK a D200 ....nope..... has to be a D80 ..... nope. It's a D70 !!!!

OK OK, so the lens he uses for majority of his shots must be a pro lens .... the17-55mm f/2.8 (800) ....nope. OK a decent Sigma lens at around 400 .... nope. It's the kit lens that came with the camera , the 18-70mm.

So he must shoot RAW & manipulate shots heavily in Photoshop. Nope .... he shoots Jpeg & hardly touches anything in Photoshop. OK, he must have brilliant printer at home ... nope he uses the likes of Pro Am with 75pence 15"x10" prints.

So let's get this straight. We have a very successful photographer on the international competition circuit, who shoots with a camera worth about 170 s/h, with a lens worth approx 100 s/h. So for 270 this photographer has achieved a level of success that many of us can only dream about.

Makes you think

I think for most of us mere mortals, spending the money on photography courses (eg. like Les runs), or joining a local camera club that runs shoots, or going away for the weekend with sole purpose of taking photographs , might be more fruitful

Re: Humbled tonight

Funnily enough, I tried looking for a local camera club the other day, but the ones near me all meet on a Tuesday evening (maybe this is standard for clubs) which I can't get to, nor is it possible for me to go on courses Maybe when my daughter starts full-time schooling But at the moment, I get a few odd hours which often end up being spent doing housework/chores Another thing I spend time on when I should be taking photographs is Pixalo

Re: Humbled tonight

I'm currently 2/3rds of a way through a City & Guilds level 2 in photography. Most of the portfolio shots and all the the black and white photos are on film. So it was put the DSLR down get my Olympus OM2/sp repaired and start thinking like a photographer. So far it has been fun using 20 year old technology. I've learnt lots especially about black and white photography.
I'm sure the new knowledge will come in handy when I start using the DSLR again.

Re: Humbled tonight

Oh my god Dave has been Gannard. Well thats what we call it.

Peter is a great photographer, but he has been doing it for a very long time, 25-30 years ago Peter and David Johnson found a style of photography that had not been done so much, they also were one of the first pair to find the trick of internationals.

Enter images to the international, when you have one that wins something, send that to all and add something new. This gain them there first awards, then it took him 20 years of hard work to gain his P. They found a style of photography that they then mastered to such a level that it would not matter what camera you gave them they could enter automatic pilot and produce a perfect picture.

The advantage that the longer running photographers have is that they started with camera's that did not have automatic pilot, they had to set everything to make it work. Nowadays we have become to reliant on the camera getting it right. Maybe we should all turn the camera to manual modes and learn how to take the picture.

Dave can I jest say that that was one of the best vote of thanks I heard at the club.

Re: Humbled tonight

Well I've been 'into' it for a few weeks only, so maybe I have no right of reply. My husband bought me a camera fot Christmas and I didn't bother too much until I could get out on my Easter holidays. I've had nothing but support and constructive critism from pixalo contributors - and I can't get to a camera club because of work. I have SO much to learn, but I can't do better than this place - friendly advice/tutorials and I enjoy reading the rest !
This will do for me!
Regards
Nellie

Re: Humbled tonight

/ soap box /

Two basic aspects to photography - composition and technique. The first is artistic; the second is scientific. Learning to see and compose a good pic is 90% of the battle. There are a helluva lot of mediocre photos out there, especially now everyone with a mobile phone is a photographer.

Technique (or to I mean technology?) is something to learn. As hoffy says, relying on the camera to get it right won't teach you that. Switch everything to Manual and that's how things were not so long ago. The 127-point AF, zillion zone evaluative metering and all the other fancy electronics are just adjusting focus, shutter speed and aperture as they see fit. They don't know what sort of shot you're taking, or how you want it to look. They don't even know how light or dark it's meant to be, or whether it's all supposed to be bright pink. They're really not that clever, whatever the adverts say.

I now have a canon 400d...only if i was to get big lump of cash would i then consider upgrading that..

Re: Humbled tonight

I am also entering a few Internationals and gradually collecting the points that may eventually qualify me for the lowest level FIAP award (Peter Gennard has the highest level FIAP award). I took the opportunity last night to explain that , while I could win Club Trophies and gain sufficient acceptances in Internationals, I did not seem to able to achieve international medals and awards (Peter has as many as anyone). I had hoped he could tell me a secret which could tip the balance but he just said that it is difficult to climb that last level. I am aware from other very successful photographers that a lot of the skill is about recognising what is good.

If there were 20 photographs which were all of a good standard, technicallly perfect, and interesting subjects, Peter could pick out the one with the potential to win the Gold medal but most of us could not. I have no idea how you learn this skill. It is also as well to remember that there are many "good" photographs other than competition winning photographs. Peter actually paused longer on a couple of pictures of his grandchildren than he did for his Gold medal winners.

Excellent Vote of thanks Dave!

It was interesting the comments about a certain shot wouldn't work well in America comps, but would do well in Italy .... I think knowing the style that works in each country is a big advantage.

As I said in another thread where this misconception was raised, composition and (I think you mean...) the technical aspect BOTH have artistic AND scientific methods.

You mean you don't have to learn composition In fact "technique" relates as much to composition as it does to exposure, i.e. there are techniques involved in composition as well as exposure. I think you are confusing "technique" with the "technical" aspect of photography, by which we usually mean: exposure, DoF, colour, WB etc. etc. Although every one of these also falls under "composition", in that you can use "technical" aspects to alter the composition of an image without ever rearranging your subject/s. Point being I think it is a mistake to separate "composition" and "technical" aspects too much, because they are intertwined all the way.

I myself shoot in manual mode, as I'm sure do many others. It is good advice, as it does teach you to think more carefully about exposure. But for those who learn photography other than by a set curriculum (college courses + the like), it is easier to get started using A or S modes, but NOT auto.

With no disrespect to those who have more experience than me, I think that the Art of Photography is not as cut and dried as some make it out to be, and there are many ways to skin a cat

There is one condition to this statement though Charlotte ... only if the Photographer understands a) how to use all these controls, b) the impact to the final image from changing any of these settings. Otherwise you have more chance of screwing up your settings & thus your final image. I should know & Steve can back me up, when I tried to use SB800 Flash before on the D200. I was getting constant under exposures & for the life of me couldn't find out which setting was causing it. In the end I had to "reset" all camera settings & then it worked

Re: Humbled tonight

That is a good point about what picture fits where, you can also take this one step further. Don't take what a judge says about your picture in a club comp as gospel. I entered one this year that the judges comment was "techanilly a good picture, but is quite boring". A lot of new members would have taken it as gospel.
I have entered it in two comps since, Midphop and Rushden, it has been accepteded in both and got a highly commended in both as well that says it was one of the top 6 pics in that section. Must admit I have now sent it to 4 internationals chasing that medal.
I am in the same boat as Dave the Canon, I have all the points needed and the number of prints in the number of countries needed, but can I get that award in international. BPE and Midphop not a problem.
Another David a friend of ours from the club was having the same problem, then this one picture nearly won everything it was entered in and bingo all complete.
One thing that Peter did say that it is now so much harder to win anything than it was when he got his awards, the digital age has opened it up to the world. The dominating power in photography at the moment is Asia. China in poticular.

Re: Humbled tonight

Where do you find all these comps and international comps to enter in to?

id also be interested in geting some of those letters after my name like arps frps etc not for self glorification but it might help to pursuade others that i mean business.

Talking of business ive just managed to get 600 worth of photography equipment drop through my door free of charge from a leading photographic company. (all i did was ask)

Become official photographer for a leading charity and have 2 events booked, 1 involving LFC and BMW

A leading estate agent contact me enquiring about vt's

And ive just managed to secure a deal with a (the) major leading supermarket to go instore and provide my services and have my name blazened all over the store

Dont ask how but i guess im doing something right

Dave

Re: Humbled tonight

On the Sb800 manual, launch the Nikon one out the window and buy Simon Staffords book on Nikons speedlight systems (about 14,) highly recommended and alot easier than Nikons effort.

Thanks VP + muscle750 for link/info
