£30 to learn everything you need to know about the legal and business side of being a photographer. Can't complain about that, can you?

I don't know whether you can stll get it but 'My Mamiya Made Me A Million is a very good book. It deals less with the nitty grityy of business, but more with the psyching yourself up, believing you can do it attitude. I read it from cover to cover in one night.

Charlie Waite, the landscape photographer, said in a recent interview:

Quote:
When it comes to working out how to place a value on photography I think people who don't sell regularly often underestimate the costs of their experience: their talent, the investment, travelling overseas, and waiting for hours or sometimes days for the light.

When they have an exhibition they don't really appreciate that, sometimes selling an image for £50, having arrived at an asking price by totting up the cost of the paper, ink, postage, and a small mark-up. In the long run I think this does photography a disservice.

Photography is increasingly recognised as art in this country, which can only be a good thing for photographers, and it's up to all of us to develop that. You can't arrive at a print price just by totting up the cost of the paper and ink. There's a bit more to it!

That sounds exactly like web design. Theres far too many people in web design under charging which brings down the rest of the industry. We get clients all the time going "OMG £200 for a website???? But my sisters cat will do it for £50". Maybe its simply too weird for newcomers to fully appreciate the value of their own work, like me.

I tried ordering that book but the site didn't work for me Amazon say 4-6 weeks! I'll try again later on my Mac as my PC is having issues recently.
