I think it might be broken

I have a Canon S1 IS that I use from time to time - for the 'quick' around the house stuff, or if I just want to stuff a camera in my pocket and take on a walk, generally when I can't be bothered with the 20D. I have loved my S1 but I think it might be broken?

It was working fine a couple of weeks ago, but I took a picture yesterday and the world had gone pink. I have done a few more tests today - changing memory cards, taking pictures inside/outside and the world remains pink in places.

When I look through the viewfinder sometimes the colours seem OK but the image has lots of pink appearing where it shouldn't be. Sometimes the image through the viewfinder is showing pink too.

Example:

What do you think? Any thoughts on what might cause the problem?
I feel quite sad at the thought of this cameras demise but not sure if it's worth repairing.

Re: I think it might be broken

Good to hear that you're in the pink.

Mmmm.... since you've tried swapping things and the viewfinder image is also affected, it sounds horribly as if the sensor or processor has developed a fault - in which case it won't be worth repairing.

Its maybe just got a metering problem, how long you had it? I reckon you could probably get it fixed if it was less than a year.

It looks rather like one of those 'chrome' effects - could it be a deeply-buried feature determining in-camera special effects has been accidentally enabled?

Re: I think it might be broken

I read recently of a photog who dropped their camera in some water. After drying the camera carefully, everything worked except the ability of the sensor to interpret colors correctly. He took advantage of that by continuing to shoot and developed a unique personal "style" that others simply could not duplicate because they did not have the camera with the wacky sensor.
So, embrace your misfortune and see what develops.

Re: I think it might be broken

My new photography stylee of "In the Pink" - very funny

I've had the camera for about 3 years I think and although I don't use it very often now (mainly using the dSLR) it's handy to have for general snaps and videos. The thought of it being forever pink is a bit of a worry - I am so not a 'pink' type of person! Had it been a blue or green hue, I might have stuck with it as it does look kind of funky!

But there is news - a bit of an internet trundle revealed the following info:

Quote:
In the first half of October, 2005, a number of digital camera and camcorder manufacturers issued service advisories involving a range of digital camera models (as well as some digital camcorders and PDAs that incorporate image sensors). In each case, the story was similar - CCD (image sensor) failures, particularly in conditions of high heat and humidity, led to cameras capturing images with either no picture at all, or with extreme distortion and severe purple or green color casts. An example of the latter symptom, courtesy of the Konica Minolta Europe website, can be seen further down this page. We first started hearing about this problem in late September and early October, 2005, with a significant increase in reader emails about it in the first week of October. The problem understandably caused considerable concern among our readers, with many wondering whether this was an ongoing problem that could affect current cameras.

Initial service advisories by Sony, Canon, Fujifilm and Konica Minolta were soon followed by announcements by Nikon, Ricoh, and Olympus. Affected cameras were all manufactured between 2002 and 2004, the underlying problems have apparently been found and corrected, so no cameras currently on the market are affected.

...
it appears that the problems trace to certain models of image sensor chips manufactured by Sony between 2002 and 2004
...
What the problem looks like
The problem can take any of several forms, but all involve severe color shifts and/or severe distortions of the image.
...
In the early stages of the problem, the camera may still capture recognizable images, but with a washed-out appearance and a strong magenta or green tint.
...
What to do if you have an affected product:
In all cases, the manufacturers involved are offering free repair of affected products, even if the original warranty period has expired.
...
Blah Blah Blah
The article includes a blooming great long list of affected models

A call to Canon indicates that this could well be the CCD fault and I have been put in touch with a Canon repairer who will fix free of charge. If the problem turns out to be something different they will let me know and quote for repair. I'll then decide whether to go ahead or look for a replacement point and shoot.

I'll let you know whether it gets fixed or not

Re: I think it might be broken

Update!

I have just taken a call from the Canon repairers. They have been having problems sourcing the replacement part for the S1 IS. I thought she was just apologising for the delay but she went onto say that they had a replacement camera for me instead if I was happy to accept?

Okaaaaaaay, I say, tell me more...

She then said, "I'm very sorry the replacement is not an S1 IS, but the replacement is a brand new camera comes with 6 month warranty but unfortunately it does take a different sized memory card... it's an S5 IS. Are you happy to accept the replacement?"

Am I heck!

I do believe that is what could be known as a "result"!

Well that is a result, much better than bidding on Canon_uk Auction site for a refurbished one.

You could tell them that you've posted a message to say how good Canon have been on a certain photo forum.

I've been working away from home the last couple of days, I can now confirm that the S5 IS has arrived! It was in a sealed box, all new and shiny.

So many things have not gone my way the last couple of years, it makes a nice change for something to work in my favour
