Ice hockey this weekend

Well it's my daughter's birthday treat to watch the Fife Flyers ice hockey match this weekend and it's going to be the first outing with my new camera. I have a 70-210 F2.8 sigma lens that I think is the best suited lens I have for hockey. I looked into hiring a 70-200 f2.8 from Calumet but it's a tad expensive for a first time out. Maybe next time.

I was wondering if anyone had any tips or hints, do's and don'ts for me? I'll need to look at my panning technique and I guess I'll be looking at setting the focus manually rather that relying on the sigma Af as it's probably going to be too slow for ice hockey. For those of you that don't know, I just bought a 5D mkII. What settings would you suggest (I'm thinking more along the lines of Af settings/auto iso/exposure settings rather than shutter speed and aperture). Obviously I'll be trying to freeze the action and still have some blurring to show the speed, and probably f2.8 to gather as much light as possible.

Any tips at all will be gratefully appreciated. I'm really looking forward to it and it'll be exciting taking the shots because there's no netting or plexi glass for most of the rink at Kirkcaldy. Wish me luck

Have you checked out Lenses For Hire Click Here I've used this company before and it was a very professional service. Prices are more than reasonable, deliver to your door in a well packaged box and instructions how to use same packaging for return.

I'll be interested to see what tips you get regarding the ice hockey. I guy I know does training at Murrayfield says I can go along one night to shoot them in action. Never took photos in ice rink before so I'll be watching this thread

Re: Ice hockey this weekend

P-E's certainly shot ice hockey but I'm guessing with the speed you'll need to keep the shutter speed up

We too have used Lenses for Hire and I'd thoroughly recommend - ironically, we hired that lens (Canon 70-200mm f/2.8) and then the f/4 IS version. Convinced me that I needed neither! I'm intrigued that you've the Sigma 70-210mm f/2.8 and want to hire a 70-200mm lens! Is the Sigma really that bad (reviews seem mixed on it)?

Re: Ice hockey this weekend

The sigma is a stunning lens. I love it to bits. The only thing that I'd change is to make is focus faster. That said, I don't know how much faster the canon one would be.

Re: Ice hockey this weekend

Well I learned a lot at the weekend. It's very difficult taking shots in there. I ended up with iso 5000 and a shutter speed of 1/500th but I got a couple of shots that came out ok.

What lens did you use Clanny, these look good. Perhaps the advert behind the goalkeepr could be blurred a bit more, a dirty mind like mind thinks it says something else

Re: Ice hockey this weekend

I used my sigma 70-210 f2.8. It was great and kept up with the action focus wise very well. I shot those shots from rink side which was a bit scary when the puck hit the boards right next to me . I didn't need a media pass and stood beside the guy who takes the shots for the programmes.
