Ideal (Canon) Lens for Event Photography

I do mostly indoor events , have a 430ex flashgun , and i love going closeup on the faces along with the regular full length & waist up images.
My next buy is a 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM , so you can understand how deep my pockets are , how would it be for such event photography ? Any other recommendations guys ?

Re: Ideal (Canon) Lens for Event Photography

I'm not a Canon guy, but I think for low light, indoor shots you would be better off getting something with a much wider aperture, f/2.8 or f/1.8 for example. Obviously if you go for something like the Canon 70-200 f/2.8, it is going to cost, but I'm not sure this lens will satisfy your requirements, especially at the long end.

Depends....are you able to move around? If you are then I would buy a 50mm f1.8 first. If you can't then how much zoom will you need?

Hi Madman,

The 70-300 you mentioned is a great lens for close up portraits. You can be far away and capture really natural expressions without the subject noticing. I took this with the very lens you are talking about at a wedding.
