Indoor without flash *upated*
I have a sneaking suspicion that next weekends event is going to be wholely or partly held in an indoor arena, now I can t use flash due to the horses
What settings should I be aiming at for moving horses indoor? Any help appreciated ![]() Last edited by Summerleft : 10-09-2007 at 21:34. |

Re: Indoor without flash
High ISO, wide apeture & fast shutter speed. Just do a few test shots to get your settings before the horses start to get what you want (I would think you would need a shutter speed of around 1/400) and adjust your white balance according to the lighting.
Is this the magazine job? If it is, you maybe need to find somewhere to pratice beforehand so you get it right on the day. |

Re: Indoor without flash
I don't know about flash with horses but with dogs flash is no problem since their eyes don't react fast enough to see the flash (what they do react to is the high pitched whine as the flash recharges though).
It may be the same with horses, why not pop down to a stables and fire off a few shots with flash direct at the horses to see what happens. You may be lucky and it may solve your problem (and increase success rate on the day). Let us know. Les |

Re: Indoor without flash
I cant use flash Les the horses dont like flash if you are close up it can make them spook, some may be ok but the horse people go mad , one person blamed the photographer i was working with for her horse going over the wrong jump!
He stopped using flash after getting a lot of earache from them, so will ask him what settings he uses |

Re: Indoor without flash
Well its all indoors and apparently the light is pretty poor, Im told the lights adjust automatically to the light being let in from outdoors

I don't know if you have a fast zoom lens (e.g. constant f/2.8 70-200) but if your going to be doing this kind of job often you will most likely have to purchase one, it'll be the only way to consistently get decent results in these conditions... Good luck! ![]()

Re: Indoor without flash
I agree you are going to need a fast lens. If you don't have one, if this is a one off or you are unsure, you could hire one or two to see if they suit.

Re: Indoor without flash
well Im home on lunch and the place is a nightmare! lol lights changing every five mins through tiny sky lights, there are horrible yellow spot lights all over and little natural light, my WB wont register 67% of the time so keep grabbing people outside lol and I am now realising how much more equipment i do REALLY need lol
Everyone is stressed as the turnout is poor and the organiser snapped at my OH for asking who someone was again when he had already given me the details! Lost my assistant now me thinks lol oh well right it off to experience will post any good ones tonight |
