international variants in canon quality
Do canon lenses vary in quality depending on which country they are manufactured in.
I am looking to buy a lens from hong kong (onestop digital) as the price is almost £250 less than the same one i can find in the uk. Also the canon warranty is not honoured internationally. should this be a concern. onestop do offer a 6 months return to store warranty. this is the same if i were to get it bought for me in the states, i could not get the warranty validated here in the uk. the lens i'm looking to get is the EF 70-200mm L IS USM. Is there a variation in quality? can anyone please help. Thanks k |

Re: international variants in canon quality
As far as I know, most Canon products are manufactured in one place, so there should be no variation in quality wherever you actually buy from.
I also believe that Canon lens and accessory warranties are international, but their camera warranties are regional. The Hong Kong suppliers try to beat the system by not charging VAT and under-declaring the value of the goods. You may be caught out and have to pay import duty, VAT and a handling charge on delivery, although some suppliers (including OneStop, I think) offer to refund this. OneStop's prices for the f/2.8 and f/4 versions of the 70-200 are £1191 and £763 respectively, compared with £1386 and £916 from Amazon. The saving is attractive, but it's your call as to whether the advantage of a UK supplier outweighs the price difference!

Re: international variants in canon quality
I bought a Canon 10-22 from Onestop, the only difference was the packaging. It had Chinese writing on it.
I found a company in Scotland that advertise in fleabay for much the same price. All Canon lenses are covered by International warrenty but I reckon they know whats going on with the likes of Onestop. Up to now I've had a the 10-22 a battery grip, some Kenko tubes and a few other bits off Onestop. I've never paid duty on any of them but I've also had nothing faulty so haven't a clue about warrenty claims.

Re: international variants in canon quality
Presumably, if duty is not paid you could be asked to pay later. I believe that Customs can check the serial Numbers on your equipment and determine instantly whether duty has been paid. However, I have never been stopped by customs and equipment checked though mine is all duty paid.
Just looking on their website, they make it clear that no VAT is charged but you can claim it back from them. So I presume the best approach would be to contact Customs and offer to pay the VAT then claim it back from One Stop? Personally, I would prefer to pay the best normal UK price and retain my legal rights and UK Warranty. Dave |
