Jessops avin a laugh!

Last week a friend of mine asked me to take some photos of a project she had done anyway i was going to print them at home the best 10 A4 size, Thought it maybe cheaper to get them printed at my local friendly Jessops, The price quoted and checked by the manager wait for it .................58
In the end went to my local Sainsburys and paid just over 20, or rather they did.
The quality and colours are spot on and have no compliants at all.
Plus today i went to another Jessops in a nearby town and they had very little stock the shelves were empty one camera in one display.
Cant see them lasting much longer. and charging those prices i aint surprised.

Re: Jessops avin a laugh!

Jessops' shares fell 35% today to a new low of 95 pence, a tenth of their value in January. In July they were still worth 8. Since November they've gone down from 4 to less than 1.

There's no way they can survive that. It will be sad to see them go because at one time they were a good company, and there aren't many real photographic shops left. That's because Jessops bought them out.

BBC NEWS | Business | Market Data | Shares | London | Jessops

I apologise - divide all the figures in my previous post by 100. I was reading it as pounds not pence!

So the shares are now worth less than a penny each,

It will be sad to see them go and I suppose they must bear a little of the blame. I don't think they will be the last either ... many town centres are going to become ghost towns.

Re: Jessops avin a laugh!

Even during the 'false boom' years many high streets seemed to have more short-lease shops than anything likely to endure, but now there's the prospect of out-of-town malls and 'business parks' closing if they're over-leveraged or enough tenants can't pay the rent.

It's worth reading Robert Peston's blogs on the BBC website.

Add to that the latest IEA forecast that oil production will plateau in 2020, and we're all doomed because it will take an estimated 18 years for industrialised (= oil-dependent) economies to prepare for that even if they try hard.

Time to move somewhere remote and potentially self-sufficient - Sark sounds good.

My town, Maidenhead has many closed & boarded up shop fronts. This has occured over the past few years and now is accelerating.

Last week I walked down the High Street past Jessops and many others which were totally empty of customers. On reaching the three charity shops I noticed that they were doing quite a brisk trade.
Then I came upon this new shop called "THE ONE POUND SHOP" .You could not get through the doors easily and the place was jammed packed with shoppers and the tills were buzzing.
Interestingly they were'nt selling any camera equipment .

Re: Jessops avin a laugh!

I remember Maidenhead quite well - as it was 40 years ago! I lived in Westborough Road and went into town quite often to hand over my pocket money to Waltons model shop on King Street. That's when I wasn't giving it to St Marks Models. I had a Saturday job in Currys on the High Street.

Everything seemed so permanent then. You could never imagine Woolies disappearing.

A small world Silky. My wife & I moved here in 1970. I remember the two model shops you refer too, both long gone. There is one in Queen Street but specialises mainly in Radio Control models.
The last real Camera shop to sell up was Vic Oddens its now a Injet Cartridge refill shop now.

Re: Jessops avin a laugh!

When I bought my first camera (or rather when my parents bought it for me), the shop gave me a small packet of lens tissues. Being the squirrel that I am, I still have them...

Re: Jessops avin a laugh!

I'm impressed that you remembered the items let alone found them.

This is now 74 Queen Street. If I remember Maidenhead Camera Exchange and Vic Oddens were only a few doors apart and both did good trade with excellent service. Vic Oddens closed and became "Focal Point" Camera shop and was run very succesfully up until the digital era and the arrival of "JESSOPS".
A nice bit of history Silky and now long will the last remaining Maidenhead Camera shop last!?.

Re: Jessops avin a laugh!

Bad times coming, a few years ago ,if you had said would I like to be 30 again,I'd have snapped you're hand off .

But at 61 now I would not entertain you.........
I totally feel sorry for the younger generation ,can't get on the property ladder, and with the recession coming millions out of work ...........

It will probably be OK ten years from now but black times ahead....

Re: Jessops avin a laugh!

It is a shame about Jessops but....they have themselves to blame they opened too many shops and employed sales people who knew little about photography or they were not trained to deal with the real world, the best Jessops in Birmingham closed 2 or 3 years ago which just left the one big store in the City, I do most of my shopping at Calumet at least they know what they are selling and how to use it!
