Jessops going gone!
Seems Jessops may have the bank call in the debts end of January with even the management saying "We may well fold" seems running at a £69 million loss
Trouble is u some good ones and sum right useless ones "Got a D300 and u get "Plus they just cant match net prices sad to see them go if they do but they should have reinvested the early profits instead of planting 4 shops in every 300 yards in every town most with no stock. Plus i gather a few that were shut had "Empty stock rooms" when they shouldnt have!!! ![]() At times Jessops have got to be one of the most incompetent shops on the high street same old story pay peanuts get monkeys! |

Re: Jessops going gone!
I won't be sorry to see the back of Jessops. The very fact you get such hit or miss service with them says to me they were overstretched, putting too many camera shops in too many towns with too few experienced staff.
I drove out to the Ythan estuary once, great birdlife spot, realised I'd left all my CF cards at home so nipped in to the Ellon shop, where my choices were pay something like 4 times expensive internet price for a 1GB card, or put my camera in the boot and go for a wander with the binoculars. I saw a red throated diver in flight ![]()

Re: Jessops going gone!
I do not buy from Jessops now as it it is more convenient as well as cheaper to buy from the internet. However, I think it would be sad if they closed. Those who go back 30 years will remember that Jessops were then putting the smaller Photo shops out of business due to their mail order prices. A trip to Jessops HQ in Leicester used to be a real treat back then. Initially their shop prices were very competative but they started to creep upwards. Despite comments by others, my local Jessops used to and still does employ some knowlegeable staff. In fact I would have a job to name any high street store which does employ staff who really know their products (apart from Jessops) etc.
The problem is, if you and I no longer shop there, they cannot stay in business. Dave |

Re: Jessops going gone!
My 30D was from Jessops but only because my insurance for nicked 300D gave me the vouchers. We have Jessops (one shop, but two 3 months ago) We also have Wilkinsons here but they were less than helpful with my Christmas presents.
Reccommend A J Purdy. Fast service, great communication. |

Re: Jessops going gone!
Will be sad to see them go if they do i dont think its soley all their fault i just think its the nature of the stuff they sell. When u think about it i cant really think of any retailer that can continually sell the same items day in day out apart from clothes and food.
Once people bought a camera they aint gonna go back for another for at least 2 to 3 years if at all. True there are some very knowledgable staff in some shops inc ours however having some good staff in some shops whats in the others! I have even seen lenses priced at over £200 more than i could buy from a official Nikon retailer in London. i feel sorry for people who may lose their jobs, and hope they can resolve this situation, But unless they get a buyer and go in a different direction cant really see them surviving, |

Re: Jessops going gone!
Unfortunately I feel they've brought this on themselves...
Many stores with unknowledgable staff, high prices especially on smaller items like memory cards etc and multiple stores in areas that can't support them is no way to run a competitive business IMO... very silly!. The one good thing that will hopefully happen if they do go under will be the return of the smaller photo shop that gives you a more dedicated knowledgable personal service. ![]() |

Re: Jessops going gone!
i think its a sad day, not necesarily becasue its jessops it just that there are less and less dedicated photography shops out there, some people dont like buying from the internet, or are unable to and sometimes its nice to be able to go into a shop and "see" the item you are purchasing and also be able to get it then and there.
at this rate those who cant or wont buy from the internet will be unable to get anything! Fi |
