Jessops re opens

For the info of anyone in the High Wycombe area, Jessops in the Eden centre has re opened. I must admit to not using them for several years due to them never having stock and being mainly "box sellers". It will be interesting to see if the new owner changes that.

Re: Jessops re opens

I visited their web site yesterday, it's like they've never been away....same layout, home and advice pages etc. I suppose some people will think they are the same company not knowing went bust.

Re: Jessops re opens

I went into the Birmingham Branch on Friday, Welcome to the New Jessops was my greeting from a senior salesman who seems to me to have worked there for years, although I don't buy much from Jessops I have in the past.....I do hope they do well if only for the people that work there! we need more than one Photography shop in Birmingham just to keep everybody on their toe's! .........

Re: Jessops re opens

Absolutely Des, the more shops, the more competition and the better the prices. Also as you say it keeps people in work.

Re: Jessops re opens

Peter Jones states that they will sell at internet prices including in the shop. I am considering buying a Bridge camera and looked at the Jessops current price. Yesterday the Jessops price was 72 higher than Amazon. I noted today that both have reduced the price by 20 so still a 70 gap. Why would I pay 70 more at Jessops?

Re: Jessops re opens

I would imagine they are going to rely on aftersales, extended warranties etc once they've matched any web prices thing is they would if pushed do this before they sunk. However they must of had massive overheads in rents leases etc. if they stay with a third or less of their original high street outlets and stay competitive they should survive if they get greedy or the people at the top fleece the company in renumeration packages they will go the same way as the titanic for a second time
it would be good to see them make a go of it as it keeps the others on their toes who all seemed to suddenly have a "price review" as soon as they disappeared over the horizon

Maybe they will price match? Things do move quickly on the web, and I'd bet that it is impossible to keep up with all of the prices available for any given product.

Re: Jessops re opens

Whatever I want to buy I ask for a discount! then I remind them if I order on line most places will deliver the next day, if all this fails asked if a SD or CF card can be thrown in! that often works....if all this fails just say I really want to do a deal but that you cannot come to terms with the price difference, it always gives me great pleasure if I can buy in my home town, but sometimes like you I cant justify the price! my latest compact camera was bought at a really good price (cheaper than online) at the time and shortly afterwards everybody was selling at the same price as my regular dealer.........

Re: Jessops re opens

Even if my local Jessops had re-opened, there is little incentive for me to waste time visiting the store to haggle over the price and at best match Amazon. It is much easier to just order on-line from Amazon. I actually stopped buying camera kit from local shops in the 1970's when I discovered a mail order company offering a large range at low prices; they were Jessops of Leicester. There is now very little I do not buy on-line. Even on the couple of occasions I have had a problem with the goods, it has been much easier to resolve than dealing with a local shop. However, I still like the model where the bulk of orders are on-line but there are a limited number of regional showrooms offering viewing, advice and support. If Jessops could get close to mainstream on-line prices but offer more with the regional showrooms, they might succeed. Peter Jones suggested that, if this model was successful, it could even force Amazon on the the high street.

Re: Jessops re opens

Problem is that if all camera shops disappear newbies to photography or people wanting to upgrade will have nowhere to take the advice that we regularly dish out:

Quote:
get a short list of three or four cameras and then handle them to see which one suits you best in the way the controls are accessed and settings changed and what menu system makes the most sense to you
That will leave them at the mercy of adverts, friends and family and Boots or PC World assistants. On line buying works well for those with the knowledge, but is a huge gamble for those who haven't.

The Jessops model might work, but how many people are going to travel any sort of distance just to handle a camera?
