F4 and no IS on the 70-200? I try not to be a lens snob but on a crop body that might be limiting given the kind of work you have in mind. For weddings you often need the 70-200 in low light and can't count on a tripod.

I feel comfortable holding the said lens at a pretty low shutter speed. What I have found with VR on the Nikon & IS on the Canon , is it's all good & well it allowing you to hold the lens at silly low speeds, but people often keep moving & you end with blurred shots.

For low light I will move to the f/1.8 primes

I agree about the moving thing, but the F4 will mean slower shutter speeds.

The 200mm 1.8 Canon is not cheap, tricky to slip in a pocket and only available 2nd hand

85mm is a bit short from the back of a church where you are often told you have to set up. If it's a budget thing I'd go third party and get a Sigma 2.8 lens. That extra stop has got to be worth it over the canon badge on the lens and ehm it's not white!

One to keep in mind, although for 1 stop I can up the ISO a notch. TBH, I considered the Canon 70-200 f/2.8 , but I would rather not have the weight for the day. I've had the Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 on the Nikon & although a great lens, I did feel the weight over a period.

The other consideration was how often I would use the lens fully open at f/2.8 ..... at weddings my understanding is it's usually safer to be around f/4 , f/5.6 just to make sure you get the subjects in perfect focus.

Heck , if I've got it wrong , you'll see a lens up for sale soon

At the weekend on Auto ISO I was at 5000. F2.8 and 1/80th and outside the church it was brilliant 1pm sunshine! Upping the ISO to get another stop would be a big compromise on image quality.

The F4 is an amazing lens no question and you gain a lot for losing one stop and IS. IQ is better than the 2.8 in some cases and it's easier on the shoulders.

Re: Just ordered my Canon gear

I am using the Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 and I am struggling to get consistent 'perfect' focus at f/2.8 with the result that I am rarely using the lens wider than f/4 anyway.

Re: Just ordered my Canon gear

Dave, when you do give up your Canon gear remember to offer the kit to Camera Club members first.

As far as other lenses are concerned the 70-200 f2.8 L IS lens is excellent but at 1.5 Kg, it is heavy. I can definitely recommend the Canon 20-22mm.

Re: Just ordered my Canon gear

When I used Ian's (thanks ) I did make a comment about the weight, but with a monopod, which I suppose one ought to carry around, I don't think it'll be a problem, even if it's a shoddy one just to rest the weight on from time to time. Plus you have to take into account the weight of the 1D-MkII as well, which I imagine is heavier by a considerable amount than the 40D

I've never used a monopod with the 70-200 only the 300 (sometimes ).
