Just a question

Ok, I've done the wedding photo's of my sister and she's got them now. But I'm a bit anoyed. And the reason is that she's reworked some photo's in the way she likes obviously. I personally think the photo is ruined and wouldn't want my stamp under that photo.

Now of course she's got a different look at things and for me it's ok if she's going to do something to them. My question is, can I ask her to mention it when she posts them on the likes of Facebook to say that she's redone it herself?

Is that to rude? I just don't want to step on her feet, but I feel as though stepped on mine at this moment with that. From what I've heard, I'm not the only one who feels that it isn't very nice if people try to remake or redo your work.

Re: Just a question

No nice way of doing this Cynthia. Demand that she deletes all changed images and remind her that the copyright is yours. Although you are prepared to grant her a licence to reproduce the images for personal use, she is not entitled to edit / change them.

But

and for me it's ok if she's going to do something to them
if this is your attitude, you will have to put up with what she has done.

Re: Just a question

Well if she wants to change the photo's that's fair enough. But to be honest, I don't want her to post them on Facebook then in public. It felt like she had ripped my photo to pieces, and that's certainly not the way I want my photo's being advertised.

I'm glad that you both think the same and it's not just me.

To be honest, I think I've been a convenience and cheap rather than a photographer. Whereas I've done it in a professional way as much as I could and really put so much effort into this to deliver. I know, that's the risk I took.

Re: Just a question

You can't have it both ways

Does she know how you feel? You are obviously unhappy with what she has done so if she has any regard for you she will respect your wishes.

Re: Just a question

No she doesn't and I'm planning to visit and tell her.

But if she's got the photo's, I can't stop her from editing them. Posting them is a different matter. Or am I totally wrong here?

Re: Just a question

Probably not worth falling out over as you are stuck with family for the rest of your life. What about a compromise? Could your sister explain what it is that she wants and then you edit the photos to produce it. It still might not be the look you would like but, if you were a professional, you would have to do what the client wanted. You might also ask her to post a few of the originals of which you are particularly proud.

Very true - and as with everything, communication is the key. Ideally this should have been done prior to your handing over the pictures - or maybe prior to the wedding!

I think that I have used robust language in my earlier posts, but the message was essentially to speak to her about it.

Re: Just a question

Well that's my first priority. I did discuss what I wanted and I asked what she wanted. I'm not perfect as in I didn't have no experience and so I went by what others adviced to make sure there would be no misunderstanding.

I did ask her last month to tell me exactly which photo's she wanted doing and it was her who didn't take the time to actually go through it with me. Also she did tell me she would send me a list, which I've never received, so I just did my own thing and took the best photo's out.

This has just been more like a one way communication from my side unfortunately. Never mind, I will discuss it with her and I'm in no way going to argue and break up a good relation.

Re: Just a question

I guess i see things different ly.
I did my sisters wedding.
And i treated her no differently from any other bride that i have done the photos for - apart from the fact the photographs where a gift.
If she had done anything to them I would have treated her no differently from anyone else. Family or not.
If it meant a fall out then a fall out it would be.

Re: Just a question

Just adopt a new sister

Seriously though, not worth falling out over. According to how strong your feelings are, either ask her to only share shots you've processed, or just pull your name being associated with shots.

Still reckon adoption is easier

Re: Just a question

As said not worth falling out over ive come very close to with my sister on a few occasions yet managed to keep my mouth shut and what it was was alot more than a few manipulated photos. Im not saying thats not important but i know what a family rift can lead to and once it starts snowballing its hard to stop.
My daughters getting married next month and ive met her photographer i wouldnt dream of playing with his pictures even if i could ive seen his work and am very impressed with it.
I would say to her over a cup of coffee get the pics on the poota and lets go throu them together and show her your more professional view on what and how you took the pictures on her special day because you wanted her to be seen special in the result. If she persists then say that you dont want your name associated with her resulting pictures as you dont feel its giving any potential customers you may have inc friends etc the correct portrail of your capabilties etc.
If she throws a wobble she throws one
All i get is when am i gonna start and start writing my speech for the big day next month and as one of the guests will be a person who has made many speeches in front of high profile politicians ,conferences etc im determined to make mine special

Re: Just a question

Frankly, I'd see this as a learning experience, if people ask you to do stuff it's either a business and you treat it as such or it's a favour and you deal with it differently. A professional photographer would not hand over full res images that could be adjusted, probably just a contact sheet or watermarked low res digital images.

You said you didn't have experience of this kind of thing, now you do. I'm not trying to sound harsh but you said you don't want to fall out over it so have a quiet word, file it under experience and move on.

Re: Just a question

Thank you all for your comments, it's much appreciated

I will use it all and have a good chat with her and hopefully we'll sort it out in peace. It's not worth falling out over this and I wouldn't want to loose her. I did treat her as I would with others in a professional way.

I've also done a family photoshoot with my friend and this is going excellent. No difficulties and I'm providing the photo's and won't give the full res shots. But that's not needed either. Hopefully they are happy with the results. I know I am

I'll be putting loads up in a few weeks to show all the results.
