Keeping the mood when using flash

Hi all i have an event next week to photograph and it involves a lot of candlelit tables, possibly a fire eater. How do i keep the mood of the photographs like the candles and fire whilst using flash or should i not use flash? Im sure there are some of you who have been to a similar nightime venue and could give me a bit of direction regarding camera settings, with or without flash, whats a general rule etc.

much appreciated

Re: Keeping the mood when using flash

Bounce the flash and use it to 'fill in' the picture rather than light it, a good flash diffuser will also help

Re: Keeping the mood when using flash

Hi Steve
im using a canon 380ex so its bouncing limitations are rather restricted, im wondering how when approaching a table with people and candles on i can light up the scene but keep that lovely warm glow that lets you know it was candlelight rather than flash which makes everything look like daylight.

What would i bounce the flash off

Re: Keeping the mood when using flash

You could try using a diffuser and turning the flash power down if that is possible with your unit.

You will need ceilings that are not too high to bounce from the ceiling.

Re: Keeping the mood when using flash

Side wall or ceiling, its difficult to advise since I don't know the location.

If that's not possible then a diffuser will make a huge difference and you should be able to get one that will fit on your 380ex flash. If not, as a last resort you can make one yourself that will help soften the light. Its not so much what equipment you have as how you use it to get the final results.

You can get soft elasticated 'fit all' diffusers from e-bay for about £2.50, or Jessop's for £4.99.

These are very good :- All matching items for sale.

Dabs has just bought mine, but I also had a replica by "lambency" on ebay for about £11 all in.

Can agree with Dave on that one excellent bit of kit although a bit cumbersome if surrounded.
