re: knowledge of photography

I would go a join Sheffield Camera Club as it is one of the best in the country. You will pick a lot up there.
You will be able to team up with people who can help on a one to one basis there.

re: knowledge of photography

I'm self taught, from books, magazines and just playing with the camera until I get it right. Local cyclists will tell you about my panning practice! It took me ages to get that
I did a basic C&G course a few years ago and that was fun, a bit basic, but it's sometimes good to go over things. But local camera club didn't do it for me. It was just sitting in a dark room every week, with competitions or a slide show and didn't really give that much in the way of learning. They did have a studio group as well, but you had to pay again to join that, so it was about £40 for the club and the same again for the studio group. Decided I'd keep learning more on here.

Added to the above I'd say.. experiment! Try different setting and make notes if you can.

Re: knowledge of photography

Lots of good advice here so far

My contribution would be to break the subject down to small parts as to try to master it all in one go will be very difficult and confusing.

You might want to consider:

1 - Composition. No matter how good you other skills are, it the composition is not reasonable you pictures will not look good. There are some rules that can be broken once you are aware of them.

2 - Depth of field. This is a combination of focus and aperture selection. Once you have got a handle on this, you will have a good idea of what impact changing other settings will have.

3 - Shutter speeds. Dependant on what you are shooting. Action shots generally need faster speeds, but there will be implications on #2.

4 - ISO. Will enable you to achieve the settings you want in difficult lighting conditions.

Don't expect to be able to take all this on board without some perseverance, failures, many shots in the bin or

Where to learn? Pixalo, of course

re: knowledge of photography

Another vote for the self-taught! I kind of muddle along taking what I think are interesting/appealing images, putting them up for comment and seeing what happens! I never read any magazines or books (never have done) but will search for techniques on processing - I kind of want to follow my own path and not be unduly influenced by others.

Only photo orientated books I've got are about potential locations (then I know where to avoid - or at least be aware that they've been done to death!). I have considered joining clubs but having talked to plenty who do and reckon I just wouldn't get on

Re: knowledge of photography

Do you know I agree with Sarah on most of the clubs, but then there are one or two that are special, if you happen to be lucky to live in one of those town or cities that have one of those clubs then skies your limits. They are few and far between.
You are lucky as Sheffield is one of those, they don't just sit in dark rooms listening to old men talking about the good old days. You don't have to pay up front and you can visit to see if you like so what have you to loose.
One of the best ways of learning is getting out with groups of others, so arrange with other members would help.

Re: knowledge of photography

HEY,Hoffy....some of us old men are very keen to embrace new technology and ideas ,looking forwards instead of backwards but I have to admit that in my case, just like Homer Simpson, every bit of new stuff I learn pushes some of the old stuff out of my head, but I,m having a lot of fun in the process!
