Re: Knowlsley Safari Park Info

I keep being threatened with being dragged off here - will ask her who knows what the environmental considerations are, but got this from their site

Quote:
There are signs at the entrance to the Monkey Jungle warning visitors not to feed the monkeys and to keep car doors locked and windows closed, and it is very important that you do this. Baboons are intelligent animals who will climb into cars if encouraged, and could cause damage or injury once inside.

Visitors who do not wish to take their cars into the Monkey Jungle can now take advantage of our new 'Car Friendly' viewing route around the outside of the enclosure.
But there's plenty more info at Knowsley Safari Park

Re: Knowlsley Safari Park Info

Ray,

Whilst driving round the park you have to stay in your car. Also in some of the enclosures you have to close all windows, and in the monkey enclosure you have to lock your doors as well, otherwise you may end up with one or two extra passengers.

If the lions are being freindly they will come right up to your car.

You are allowed to park up on the roads, which gives opportunities to photograph the animals, but you cannot get out of the vehicle.

Also, you can drive round the park as many times as you like.

Ray,

A 70-300mm lens is perfect for that. I got a membership from knowsley safaripark. You do need to stay in your car. Altough there are plenty animals outside the safari.

But what about Martin Mere I think that is ideal for a meet And you can just bring your camera in without asking. It is big enough and plenty different birds too.

You mean the link to that animal park in South Lakes. That does look good yes.

I'm a bit fed up with Knowsley at the moment.

Re: Knowlsley Safari Park Info

We used to have a Golf and the sunroof jammed with a small gap at one side. As a temporary fix the garage stuck black sticky stuff (don't know what it is called but think black plasticene that stays slightly sticky to the touch) all the way around the sunroof as a weather seal.

My wife took my son to Knowsley Safari Park where the monkeys stripped the black stuff off the roof and (reportedly) ate it! They also had a go at the wiper blades as I recall.

No way you would get me out of the car

Martin Mere is a nice place but I guess it would be tripods and long lenses.

Re: Knowlsley Safari Park Info

No you don't need long lenses especially to get good photo's. And you could do without a tripod as well. The birds are very close by. And some of them even eat out of your hand, which was quiet good.

I get to Martin Mere most years but in the winter when there are lots of swans etc. about. The problem with the birds on the small lakes is that they nearly all have their wings clipped to stop them flying and it is very difficult to get a good picture of them that hides that.
What about Chester zoo or are people against zoos ?

I love Chester Zoo. So I wouldn't mind at all I'm dying to get that Jaguar on the photo. Beautifull animal, but I didn't have the right zoom lens at that time.

Another place I'm constantly being threatened with being dragged off to visit! I'm not generally keen on the whole captive animal thing, so tend not to visit places like that very often.

I know what you mean in a way but the conversation side of zoos makes up for it and zoos are a lot better than they were when i was young

I have been there Ray and its good for non dangerous or destructive animals like lemurs, ostrich etc but pretty bad for the 'interesting' animals like lions, puma etc. You are at ground level set back from very high cross link fencing and hardly any areas to gain a decent viewpoint. With you being well back from the fencing even using shallow DOF you still can't remove the fencing out of the shots...

Its very good for watching the feeding of the lions though, they lock the lions up then place big slabs of meat on the top of high wooden poles (about 30ft tall) and then let the lions out. The lions have to climb the poles to reach their food and its quite interesting and scare to see how easy they do it.

BTW you can forget photographing that bit due to the size of the crowds adding to the already mentioned chain link fence issue.

I was thinking that. I think I'd prefer a safaripark. So the one you can walk through sounds better, and easier to take nice photo's. And Steve is right about being to far away from the lions and puma's. It's hard to get them sharp and with good DOF on the picture.

No fences at Knowsley Ray, just a windscreen to shoot through, and you also get very very close to the animals.
