Landscape or Portrait?

I find myself nearly exclusively shooting in landscape format, i try to remember to tip the camera up on its end every now and again. Normally though i will forget. For me i don't see m to see things in portrait format as easily as i do in landscape (though i do like a square format every now and then). I assume this is because my eyes work in landscape mode and all those years of seeing in landscape has affected my photography.

How does everyone else see it?

Re: Landscape or Portrait?

so far a good cross section, 3 different people and 3 different ways of doing it. Says a lot about photography!

Re: Landscape or Portrait?

I shoot mostly landscape orientation but will shoot portrait if I think the scene warrants it.

Re: Landscape or Portrait?

I wish I did shoot more in portrait but don't always remember to. When looking at other people's photos, quite often the portrait images stand out more for some reason - if they are well composed, obviously. Maybe because it is a different view from what we normally see each day.

Note to self: when out and about this weekend, try some different viewing angles - perhaps even a sideways view.

Thanks for the prompt!

Re: Landscape or Portrait?

I go by the proportions of what I am taking shots of. If I think the final result will be a portrait shot I take that way. If in doubt I will go landscape as I can crop off but not add on! I still haven't got my BG-E2 grip which I will hopefully get at Christmas as then it will make portrait shots much easier to take. Until then I'll have to stick to arm over the top as usual :o0

Cheers,
Rob

Re: Landscape or Portrait?

I will allways try both when shooting any given subject, I start with whatever format I think suit's the subject best then try the other to see if there's a picture there that I didn't notice before... I've been happily surprised plenty of times finding a shot I didn't think was there at first glance

Re: Landscape or Portrait?

Depends whether the subject shouts vertical or horizontal to me! One of my recent excursions (sculptures at Chatsworth) was 6:5:2 portrait:landscape:square. Might try and up some of them in the next couple of days

Will admit to the occasional landscape ending up as a portrait crop!
But not that often, I'm glad to say
