Layers in CS 6.

I used to do a lot in Photoshop layers montages etc. But I have not used layers now for a long time and now I can't get started.

I open a new image and it shows as a background layer in the layers panel. I then open another image and it shows as a background layer and the first BG layer has disappeared. I then drag the first image onto the second image but still have only the one BG layer of the first image showing one layer only.
When I used to do this dragging one image on top of another it showed in the layers panel one above the other, and I could have as many layers as I wanted.
I could switch them on and off, change the opacity, layer masks and everything.
But now I can't get anymore than a single BG layer. I just don't understand what I am doing wrong. Can anyone help me out please?
Colin

Re: Layers in CS 6.

If you are trying to combine images, open the first one, then the second one. Then go to the window menu>arrange>tile vertically for portraits or horizontally for landscape orientation.

Now you should see both images and be able to drag one over the other. Both should now be in the layers palette and you can close the one you no longer need.

Re: Layers in CS 6.

Graham, I tried your instructions and it worked perfect, no problems. Thanks for that. I don't remember doing it this way before. I just dragged one image on top of the other using the move tool and holding the shift key, but this does not seem to work now.

OY, I could not get your instruction to work. I opened an image went File> Place and this just opened my pictures. I could not find "Place embedded"

Colin - try just File > Place - then browse to image 2. The option to place linked or embedded may be a more recent feature.

Re: Layers in CS 6.

Thanks Graham and OY. The last time I was doing layers I think I was using CS4 and I am now using CS6so there are probably some differences. Since I started using DXO 11. I don't use CS6 very much except for maybe a bit of cloning or a grad filter for minor tidy ups. And not being taking very much lately I had nothing that required using layers so just got out of the way of using it.

Re: Layers in CS 6.

Hi Colin, It's been a little while. I dropped DXO awhile back, about 3 versions. It worked well with IR. Looking at what has been said I thought of my flow for a raw file. I am convinced lightroom and ACR are ways of controlling new cameras and their raw files. Enough of that stuff,,,,you will be the first one to know if I put DXO back on the screen. As converting raw I have plug-ins that will do that so I am quite happy with PS5 and Canon DPP for IR not PS. Anyway I use layers to change lighting and color casting on every picture I use or process. Very little adjustments and also layers as better control over plug-in control. Layers are in alot of plug-ins in one form or another. Maybe I just use shadows and highlight adjusting more then most. A question for you. In your PS preferences do you have your window tabs turned on. I worked hard on seeing if it would fet into my control of open windows or pictures but finally flipped it off and my single windows were in view. Very happy now.

Re: Layers in CS 6.

Boofers, I can't really answer your question as I never do IR. to be honest I don't really like it as it looks so artificial. But that is just me others love it and that's the way it should be. I am using the new DXO 11 and I do all my RAW files in that, it is a top class program compared to three versions ago. I then export the images as 16 bit Tiffs to a new file and then open them up in CS6 if they need a tidy up or convert to B&W or use NIX. plug in. I don't have DXO as a plug in, I like them separate.
I don't know what you mean by "Windows tab turned on" I keep all this sort of thing on default position.

Re: Layers in CS 6.

Hi Colin,,, As for opening windows in tabs. Lets say you have opened a picture, you have one window open, now you want to have another picture open at the same time to do like you want, "Drop it on top in the center",, the new window opens in the window in the first picture window. If you look along the top bar of the new 2nd picture and see the file number for the first picture right there before the number for the second picture,,,,your in tabs. Click on them back and forth to select the picture you want to work on. It's a neat desktop but I like the Windows to open On top and just to the side. On newer versions like I think CS4 it was the default to open in tabs. It shows in the layers palette. Hope you understand cause I like to click shift drop my pictures on top of each other to.
