Question Lens choice

The more i look at macro on here the more am getting interested in it as well, so what would be the best choice for a lens to fit Nikon & a book on it to that doesn't focus to much on the basic set ups if you know what i mean?

Re: Lens choice

I would use a 100mm with fixed focal length and Macro with a large as possible aperture that you can afford.
All of the major manufacturers produce one.The Tamron performs quite well.
I would suggest going into your local camera shop before you decide on a purchase and try all of the makes.

Have a look at What Digital Camera this month. They have tested Canon.Nikon,Sigma,Tamron and Tokina.Macro 100mm prime lens.
In the past I have had some excellent results with Tokina lens.
I hope this helps.

Re: Lens choice

I'm reading John Shaw's "Close ups in Nature" at the moment. I'm finding it very good. It's more advanced than most, I've seen. It does feature a lot of film shots so you need to be able to convert that to digital. I don't find it an issue though.

I always recommend a macro lens of 100mm as first lens, or use auto extension tubes.

Re: Lens choice

Both Nikon and Sigma make good 105mm macro lenses.

Re: Lens choice

I use tubes and Sigma 105mm and 150mm. If you're unsure of 'going macro' tubes are the cheapest option but I find the 105mm not only great for macro (it's my preferred lens) but also great for portraits

Cheers guys, got it narrowed down to 3 lenses sigma 105
sigma180
Tokina ATX100
are they all very similar or is there one that would stand out from the rest?

Unless you have a particular need for the 180mm, I'd go for the 105mm or 100mm - the only advantage you'd get is to be slightly further away (some argue it's better to not frighten the bugs away but I don't find any advantage to the 150mm I use) and it'll be heavier and not such a shallow DOF (useful as a "normal" lens)

Those two shots look good, Brian!

Re: Lens choice

Don't forget the 90mm Tamron - surprised Jack has not jumped in with that one.

My film Tokina was excellent but the pics above I did not take.

Try and have a look at the report in Novembers "What Digital Camera Magazine"
It comes out very well with a rating of 89% against the Tamron,Sigma and Canon's own 100mm lens.

Re: Lens choice

Having already got the Tokina 24-24mm image quality is very sharp only c/a being a small concern but can be fixed in PS, the 100 has got very good reviews not taking anything away from the sigma 105 that has good reviews to, only problem is theres no Tokinas about 2nd hand compared to the sigma but the Tokinas looking good value from Onestop.
