lens choice

Hi guys, need a bit of help, might have a chance to sell my Tokina 12-24 f/4, was thinking about Tokina 11-16 f/2.8, i do use Nikon 18-70 for a lot of images to or do you recommend anything else, this would be used for seascapes & low light mostly?

Re: lens choice

Other than having f2.8, what will you be able to do that your current line-up wont?

Re: lens choice

The 11-16 is supposed to be very good, but As Stephen said, will the focal range be of any use? I rarely use my 14-24 for landscapes, and even then not usually at the wide end unless I'm very tight on space or looking for an effect.

I think only you have the key to this one Shane

Re: lens choice

As you say apart from the 2.8 there's nothing really there, a lot of the time for landscapes & seascapes i would use 18-70, sit on the money?

2.8 is only of value if you are going to use it! If you use AF in low light there are advantages, (I think that you use manual focus) but I think that the focal range is the deciding factor for your use.

Its whole range is below the 18mm you already have. Question is, how often have you wished for a wider lens?

I got my 14-24 primarily for a specific task and use it occasionally for other stuff too. The 11-16 is in the same category in my view.

If you really have an itch to scratch, MPB have 6 for between 389 and $404

MPB Photographic - Buy Used Canon & Used Nikon Digital SLR Cameras, Lenses & More

New in the UK are around 450 - probably more to dispatch to you, and e-bay show 355.

The One-Stop benchmark is 447

Camera Lenses :: Tokina :: Nikon Mount :: Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 AT-X 116 Pro DX II Lens for Nikon - Onestop Digital

It is certainly fantastic value for money - IF you have a use for it. Also bear in mind that at the short end there will be distortions that if not wanted for effect will need to be corrected.

Re: lens choice

The more i think about it ive never had it past 12mm, as for landscapes 100% of the time is 18-70, seascapes 85% of time 12-24 the other being 18-70, inside Guinness tour used 12-24 but wished i had something better as the light wasn't great & was tight in places & i don't use a flash, up iso 2.8 would be very handy for that & seascapes, lot of the times when down to f/4 with the 10 stop on the sec,s can still be very long when you dont want it to be either

Re: lens choice

So you have been to one place where the 11-16 would have been handy and your existing lenses struggled. I have to say that your pictures from there were great regardless.

If you are likely to visit similar places in the future - i.e. make use of it - the 11-16 would be a useful addition to your kit.

I think it is not realistic to expect to use all of your kit on a regular basis and you have land and seascapes covered, so it is not impossible to think that if you had the 11-16 you would go to more places where you could make use of it.

If it is not too much of a financial burden you can get it, use it and if necessary sell it for little loss.
