Lens prices

Ever wondered why we pay exactly the same for a Sony mount lens from the independent manufactures that hasn't got IS (which we don't need) as one that comes with it for other mounts? Most other mounts make a point of charging more for IS lenses............... The term rip off springs to mind.

No the punishment would be buying IS every time you bought a lens if you wanted it

Re: Lens prices

Mm Joshing aside I just had a quick look at a few well known online retailers and the Tamron-Sigma Sony mounts in most cases are exactly the same price as the Canon / Nikon mount versions. In some cases they were dearer ! Maybe Dabhand is right about the Sales/Volume thing (in some cases anyway)

Agreed, IF the non IS was cheaper but if they are the same price it makes no difference.

Weird pricing and as for OEM lenses the sony equivalents don't appear to be much cheaper. Sometimes the IS versions are cheaper.

Re: Lens prices

Well what I was looking at was the Tamron 90mm macro, which I have, against the new IS model for which the street asking price has virtually doubled. I doubt if the optics have changed much on an already excellent lens

Re: Lens prices

I know what you mean, I couldn't really see the advantage of the IS on that model, not at the huge jump in price anyway. Most macro work is tripod mounted I would have thought and if I was buying it as a Macro/Portrait lens it would be fine with or without IS tbh. As you say the optics on the original would appear to be more than adequate and literally hundreds of reviews and endorsements bear that out.

Re: Lens prices

Maybe (and I'm throwing my cynical hat far, far away for this!) there's more software work needed to get the firmware to talk correctly to the camera. Plus, of course, economy of scale will play some part (000s of IS versions vs 00s Sony non-IS). Nah! Hat back on! They're just ripping you off!

Well, thought long and hard about upgrading a perfectly good Sigma non-OS 105mm and 150mm to a Canon 100mm IS (very similar optic quality) - justified it (to myself and OH!) on the basis of IS for portraits and 2 stops for handheld macro is very useful. Very happy I did - on both counts!

Re: Lens prices

Yeah i have heard good things about the canon 100 macro IS, I only ever got a chance to try out the 60mm APS -c macro version which I felt was a little short for macro at 60mm even on the crop body but Flippin Eck! was it sharp. A stunning little lens you could easily leave on the camera. As you mentioned, that Tamron 90 takes some beating for value though.
Glad your loving the Canon 100mm, now lets have no more talk of this Sony nonsense.
