Which lens would be best

First post, apart from buying kit, so thought it might as well be a daft one I am going over to Germany for a 4 day trip, based in the Rhine Valley, Koblenz, Cochem etc. I have been before about 30 yrs ago!! There are lots of castles along the river, approx 100 metes up the slopes- so what lense(s) would it be good to have. I have a 70-300mm, a 105mm and a 50mm, i was wondering if a wide angle would be necessary(28mm) perhaps, i could borrow a 18-55mm. Would welcome any suggestions.

Re: Which lens would be best

You might find that a 10-20 would be useful if you are going to be shooting in the castles and/or the towns. I'm not familiar with the area, but I'll bet that if you get to explore on foot a 10-20 will be invaluable. My trip to the very narrow streets of York and the huge Minster with little elbow room prompted my purchase of a Sigma 10-20.

When used at the wide end there are converging verticals that you might want to correct, but they can add some drama to an image and i quite like them.

If you are going to be shooting from the rivers and the castles are up the banks, you need to consider the perspective you will get if you are shooting 'uphill'. Shooting from further away (if possible) will lessen this, so a longer lens will be better in this senario.

Thanks very much for that. I will take your advise, i have found that i can hire one for a week for 30 quid, which seems good to me. No VR or Is though, but then couldnt find a nikon with that either, wonder why.
Any way thanks again.

If you are talking about the 10-20 lenses, vr is not really needed at these short focal lengths - especially if you use a tripod. I think that in general stabilization is over-hyped. It is useful, but not essential.
