Re: lenses?

Hi Simpbow, Looking over the lot you've laid out, I like the 85 f1.8. I use it as a medium telephoto, for me it is a good walk around landscaper when things are just out of reach Itgives a good window. Also good for close ups. The 70-300 vr is likely in common ground and see'n that your long range is shy that might work out as a good choice to.

Re: lenses?

Depends on what you want to use it (them) for Shane.

You have the wide end covered so if you are looking for a bit more reach the Nikkor 70-300 vr gets good press.

I've got a Nikkor 17-55 f2.8 which makes a great walkabout lens and the Tokina is a decent lens in this range for a good price. The Tamron 24-70 2.8 with stabilization also gets good press and will give you a little more reach - around 39-112mm. The Nikkor 85 f1.8 is excellent but has the prime restrictions for framing - but as I said it depends on your use.

I guess that the 70-300 will give you the most options out of the lenses mentioned to add onto your existing lenses.

Re: lenses?

Shane, I think you have the wide end covered, you just need something a little bit longer. I use Canon L
16-35 and 24- 105 for about 95% of all my work. I have a 85mm prime and a 75-300 and 100mm macro but are very rarely used. Don't forget these numbers have to be multiplied by 1.6 to get 35mm equivalent unless you are using full frame sensor.

Re: lenses?

I have owned a 70-300mm nikkor in the past and it was one of the better lenses I have owned, however because I seemed to be picking a lot of dust up I decided to go for a 28-300mm nikkor so I dont have to change lenses when out snapping, and its quite a good lens, but of course my situation may be very different to yours, a 85mm is a handy lens to have and so is the 18-70mm, I still think your best bet is to keep what you have got and get a 70-300mm (used) I just wish it was a bit longer sometimes when I am out and about! I do have a very old 400mm lens and if I know if there's a possibilty of using it that will go in the Mrs handbag much to her delight.......

Re: lenses?

No pun intended so tomorrow the wife and I are going to the bird rescue refuge. Using my 300mm f/4 that leaves out the fence in a picture.... Oh well. Anybody that likes to plan ahead and move to position a shot can make a good home for the prime 85mm. Being a fan of yours I look forward to your photo endevers as we keep learning.
