Lenses blowing in the wind

Most everybody who knows me knows that I am fooling around with some old lenses I received very cheap. Some of them work and were cared for, these will find a place in a bag and get used some time,,,,,,. I cut up most of the broken ones and collected all the glass lenses out of them. I love to build things and both the wife and I have wind chimes, it's a crime how many we have. I want to glue fishing line to the lenses and maybe add some transparent color to some hoping to get a little light show out of them hanging from the yard some where. My question, do you think one of the better shaped glass lenses will focus light and start a fire ? I have about 55 lenses and believe it will be wonderful spinning around. q. Any answer will work here even if you think I might be a little dingy...

Re: Lenses blowing in the wind

THAT IS A VERY GOOD POINT. I THINK IT COULD BE A FIRE RISK, THERE HAVE BEEN REPORTS ABOUT PEOPLE HAVING GLASS ORNAMENTS ON THEIR WINDOW CILLS, WHICH HAVE MAGNIFIED HEAT ONTO CURTAINS ETC, THEREFOR CAUSING A FIRE.

I WOULD BE VERY CAREFUL NOT TO PUT THEM NEAR ANYTHING FLAMMABLE

Re: Lenses blowing in the wind

Hi Boofers, have you thought of getting a glass jar,(so light gets in) putting something small in it and using a lens as a magnifying top to make a display? For example, make a "habitat" in the bottom and add a tiny (dead) insect, that would appear large due to the lens. See, we are just as dingy over here.

Re: Lenses blowing in the wind

Thanks Woody, if they move they will never get a hot spot, if they are still they will but the focus is the main consideration I guess.
Blackadder, I have a small collection of glass shapes that I let sit out in the sun to weather so I might need one for an object some day, always thought about making water falling over a stand of glass with some led lights. Would be good for UV. I like the Idea you bring to the table,,I just happen to have taken the center magnifier glass out a work lamp, about 5 inches across. It's a great Idea
Thank you

The wind lenses will still be built, it is stuck in my head, right now I don't think it will start a fire. Has any body used a lens to start a fire?

Re: Lenses blowing in the wind

This sounds a lovely idea. Not sure how much of the glass will be usable after they've chimed against each other. I think if you're concerned about focus fires you only need to think about lower dioptres as long as objects that the Sun's rays can focus on are kept further away.

You can easily test any piece of glass to see if it will burn by focussing the Sun's rays onto a piece of paper. The higher the dioptre and the larger the diameter (wide effective aperture) the easier it is to get a result.

I have experienced a fire in the car more than 50 years ago. My father left a bottle full of water on the rear shelf of the car while the family took a train excursion for the day. The Sun's rays focussed on the nearby umbrella and it started to smoulder. Fortunately someone broke into the car and removed the umbrella before the fire could take hold. When we returned we found a burned out umbrella by the car - the only thing that was damaged. The world has changed over those 50 odd years. People break into cars to steal things and insurance companies insist on highly secure anti-theft systems. Sadly it would be almost impossible to give the same assistance today.

I can imagine these spinning in an evening breeze over some garden lights.
