Lenses and metadata query?
I have been browsing the metadata for my images in Lightroom and noticed some anomalies in the lens categories as below.
![]() 1 Why does a 30D read a lens as being 10.0-20.0 mm yet the 40D reads it as 10-20mm? 2 Again why two entries for the 50mm? 3 And also for the 70-300? 4 There is an 18-456mm lens listed which I know refers to a Tamron 18-200 I once had, but why does it list 18 to 456 since I have never used a teleconverter on that lens? Any thoughts on this would be appreciated. Secondly does anyone know of an exif editor that will do batches? Thanks. |

Re: Lenses and metadata query?
It's a while since I used LR, but it looks as if some of those lens entries have been added manually or by some other software that didn't go into much detail or always get it right. For example, 70.0-300.0 could be the Sigma, the Canon DO or the standard Canon IS.
Are those odd entries perhaps relics from an earlier version of LR or a conversion done with something else? |

Re: Lenses and metadata query?
Nothing has been added manually so I think your suggestion that other software may be the culprit and I'm wondering if it might be Rawshooter which I used before LR.
I know that the 70-300 refers to the Canon IS but has probably been interpreted slightly differently by RS and LR. Thanks. |

Re: Lenses and metadata query?
Not sure I know the real answer but metadata is taken from EXIF in which there is standard info (common to all cameras) and Canon info (which only Canon insert/use). Added to which, it is coded.
So, I'm guessing that any application which reads/translates the EXIF may interpret in their own way, especially the proprietary Canon info |

Re: Lenses and metadata query?
I think it is to do with camera bodies. I have a 1D and a 20D, and the 1D records the lens as EF16-35mm f/2.8L USM, and the 20D records the lens as 16.0-35.0mm.

Re: Lenses and metadata query?
Thanks for that John - so presumably it is down to the different firmware in each body.
