Let sleeping dogs lie.

My dad bless his cotton sox passed away about twenty years ago, he was very much into photography, and the loft at home was where he set up his darkroom and here he spent many hours turning out his magic moments.

Recently whilst visiting my mom, she gave me one of his very first cameras he aquired when they got married, it is a Agfa Isolate II, in excellent condition, in the camera i noticed that their was a roll of film with about 10 shots fired off.

Will this film, which i think must have been in their for over 40 years be of any use to develop, or will it have deteriorated too much? The other thing is, i keep asking myself should i bother getting it developed and let sleeping dogs lie in case of what may be on there.

Has anyone else been in a similar dilemma deciding to develop a film belonging to someone else.

Mike

If it were me, I'd develop it - probably not at Boots tho! If you don't its going to bug you forever.

What are you expecting to find on there anyway? Any particular reason for your reluctance/indecision?

Not expecting to find anything sinister at all.

Just that its not really my property.

You should probably speak to your mum about it, since it was in her house she's probably the 'legal owner' of the camera/film anyway.

Does she even know you found it?

As for film deterioration, as I said before, I wouldn't let Boots have a go at it, but I'm sure there are specialist companies who will be able to retrieve something from the film.

Everything happens for a reason. These pictures have presented themselves to you now, why not try and develop them. It would be interesting to see what's there right? I don't see how you couldn't, and yes I have found film that belonged to someone else and developed it. At the time I had questions and they answered them for me. Funny how things happen.

Cheers, Jules.

I found a roll of 35mm film in the bottom of a suitcase when I went on holiday earlier this year.

Don't know what's on it but I suspect its some photos I took at Glamis Castle back in 2002 (hoping to get a glimpse of the gray lady (and others) that haunts the chapel there). Might get off my lazy ar5e and get it developed one day.

Get it developed!! There's no guarantee there'll be anything at all on it, but there just might be, and they'll possibly be priceless images to your mum - not to mention yourself.

I've developed 50 odd year old film I found in a camera I bought, it came out ok so yours could well too. As for what is on it, probably just snapshots.

Can I suggest that you don't just go to any processor, and try Colab in Coventry? They should able to develop your film using the correct chemicals and it might cost a bit more, but you'll have a better chance of seeing some unfogged results. They don't publicise their "old" film processing but can be contacted on (024) 7644 0404 or info@colab.com. I think they had a change of ownership recently but they did some old films for me a few years ago with great results.

I used Colab for years. They used to have a branch in Wolverhampton - now sadly gone, but they still have one in Birmingham. Excellent processors! :icon_cool

I would personally get it processed.
You would definately always wonder 'what if' if you didn't, and you never know what you might find.
Besides, it will be a fitting memory of your father for you to keep.
My dad enjoyed photography many years ago, long before he died in 1997,a nd I have here, his Praktica MTL-5B with lenses et al, and they are staying with me for nostalgic reasons. I wish there was an undeveloped roll of film in there for me to process

Regards
