Why not just use the text tool?

Re: Limited edition numbers in CS2

If you are doing a larger number, then you can do it with variables in CS2, unfortunately that is cumbersome on the file size for what your trying to accomplish. To find out about it, just type 'variable' in to CS2 help, it walks you through nicely.

The efficient way would be to do it with InDesign. InDesign only stores a reference to the original and you can do full data merges and not take up a monster amount of hard drive space. It is the same idea in InDesign... just set up a Master page with a variable number, merge in the information and it will make the 'X' number of copies that you want with the number switched out nicely. If your edition number is truly just that, a number, you can do even faster in InDesign by inserting an 'Auto Page Number' and Image on a master page, set the page numbering (through pages pallete) to start at the first number in your edition, then add 'X' number of pages based on that master. The auto page number will have done the work for you.

Sound good?
