Lines in my prints

I HAVE A PROBLEM WITH MY PRINTS. I AM NOT SURE IF IT IS A FLAW IN THE PAPER, OR IF IT IS A PROBLEM WITH MY NEW EPSON PRINTER.

IF I PRINT USING THE ILFORD GALERIE SMOOTH PEARL, THEN I AM GETTING LINES DOWN MY PRINTS. I HAVE TRIED USING PLAIN PAPER ( NON PHOTOGRAPIC ) AND I DON'T GET ANY LINES.

I DON'T KNOW IF IT COULD BE THE PRINTER OR THE PAPER.

WOULD I GET LINES ON ORDINERY PLAIN PAPER AS WELL AS PHOTOGRAPHIC PAPER, IF IT WAS THE PRINTER?

Re: Lines in my prints

Woody, When you say lines do you mean white lines i.e. no ink put down or a line printed by the printer?

Re: Lines in my prints

Companies are well known for selling a printer with nearly empty ink tanks. Having read the above I would change all the tanks for full ones, do a nozzle check and alignment and then try a print. If you still have a problem then the print head or the printer is knackered and either way I would return it to shop.

If you haven't bought spare inks yet then I would just return it for a refund/replacement and start again. After all it's a new printer.

THANK YOU STEPHENO. I HAVE ORDERED A SET OF INKS, PLUS TWO EXTRA BLACK INKS, THEY ARE ON THEIR WAY FROM AMAZON NOW.

I WILL TRY THE BLACK INK TOMORROW, TO SEE IF THIS SOLVES THE PROBLEM, BEFORE PUTTING A COMPLETE SET IN.

I STILL CAN'T UNDERSTAND WHY, THERE WERE NOT ANY LINES WHEN I TRIED ORDINARY WHITE PAPER, BUT GET THE LINES WITH PHOTO PAPER

Did you set the printer for plain paper? If not, the printer would probably be sending more ink (I'm sure that photo paper needs more ink than plain paper) than was needed and this might have prevented the lines appearing.

Don't forget you also have to tell the printer what photo paper you are using in order for the correct amount of ink to be sent to the heads.

Just one other thing, is the photo paper the right way round?

My experience with Epson printers is that you can get through ink very quickly if you turn the printer off at night, or several times a day. Epson could have changed their printers since, but those that I have used needed to be left in idle to avoid the heads being cleaned every start-up. It never made any difference to the quality of the prints but did make a significant difference to the overall ink usage.

My printer is yonks old, but it detects the paper type itself by firing up a blue light on the paper before it starts printing. I would have thought that new printers were at least as sophisticated, or have they abandoned that technology?

A long shot : have you checked the paper alignment in the tray? The photo paper could have more play between the guides than normal paper and could be skewing ever so slightly. It does sound like a shortage of ink though.

Re: Lines in my prints

THANK YOU ALL VERY MUCH FOR YOUR HELP.

THE PROBLEM NOW, HAS BEEN RESOLVED. I PUT A NEW BLACK INK IN, USED EPSON SEMI GLOSS PAPER, MADE SURE THE PAPER SETTING WAS FOR SEMI GLOSS, DID A PRINT NOZZLE CLEAN.

THE RESULTS ARE NOW PERFECT. SO I DON'T KNOW WHAT THE CAUSE OF THE ORIGINAL PROBLEM WAS, BUT AN ACCUMULATION OF ALL THESE PUT TOGETHER, HAS SOLVED THE PROBLEM.

sounded like it was the print head that was choked.... canon printers let you remove the head as its replaceable part and i often used to clean it with isopropyl alchohol but im tno sure if epson lets you do the same

Kodak do the same. The carts clip into a frame. You can also remove the frame which has the head attached underneath.

Re: Lines in my prints

I don't think Epson printers have removable heads - I've owned several, but admit that it was only one that I felt had a head that needed cleaning.

I did once find with a Canon printer that one sheet of Canon paper from a pack seemed to have a problem in that the ink was still wet 24 hours after printing. All other sheets were OK, so defective paper is a possibility. My own experience of using photocopier paper for photos is varied. Using it to test an Epson 3880 printer, I thought the printer was malfunctioning due to the odd colours. On the other hand, with an Epson 2100 printer, photocopier paper gave the best neutral black and white prints. I should ass that A3 sketching paper is fine in a 3880, although the prints are dark and low contrast on normal settings.

Re: Lines in my prints

I have had three A3 Epson printers over the years and they have always been well used, but when the inks start running low you can get white lines if the inks are still good regardles of the check print heads I just go straight for the cleaning heads setting and afterwards just print out a small 5x7 print on proper photo paper! my second A3 printer packed up after using compatable ink, I have never used compatable inks again in my Epsom. I do have a inexpensive Canon A4 printer for office type work it has a scanner copier on which we use quite often, it does however print quite good color pics too, now when the ink runs out on the Canon I have some refills ready to put in just to see if it runs ok on them if it dont I will never buy refills again along with compatible inks, as I have said I only ever use the genuine Epsom ink on A3 Epsom.

Re: Lines in my prints

Some time ago I bought a cheap 50 Epson printer /scanner with the purpose of printing and scanning letters etc. and used compatible inks and all went well for about a year and the whole thing clogged up so had to scrap it. Did not matter much as it was only a cheap buy but same thing would have happened if I had used compatible inks on my Epson R2400 A3+ printer which is still going strong after about 8/9 years.
I print very little now as I am no longer in the camera club circle. So definitely only use genuine Epson or Canon inks.

Des, One still gets satisfaction, if you get a really good image Print A3+ and see it coming out of the printer and able to hold it or set in on the table and look at it. Or maybe get it framed. I have a good few in a box.
Colin.

Re: Lines in my prints

Yeh its a bit like when you know you have a good picture in your viewfinder and its better still when you see it coming out of the printer, I always loved printing even in my darkroom days, oh to be in the darkroom again watching a good monochrome develope in the dish! Its two minutes of sheer magic, it a bit like when I bought my first Epson A3 printer and even my work bench used to rock sidewards with the printer, I think the most boring sound came from the durst rota drum when I used to do my colour prints in, it now seems like a million years ago!
