Simplest solution: plastic bag. Elastic-banding the barrel through the top. A word of caution. If there's any moisture on the camera and any warmth from sun, it can lead to pretty high humidity inside the bag fairly quickly. Just something for which to watch out.

When I used my Fuji 602z, it used to spend much of it's time in a ziploc bag with a hole cut in the bottom and elastic-banded onto the extension tube. Strap came out through top of bag and if rain/dust/spray let up I'd fully open top to let it 'breath'

Now use a Rain Hood - much the same thing but no hole; an optical piece of glass at the end - not that different except for price!

Re: Looking after camera+lens when exposed to the beach, sand, salty wind nd sun

I recently took my D300 and a few lenses to Dubai, I was a bit concerned about the heat etc but it was faultless, I found somewhere "quiet" to change a lense if i had to somewhere inside etc , the only prob i did have was when i took it out at night the humidity was bad, i let the camera adjust for 20 mins to the heat before i used it, I used it on the beach with no probs and also in the dessert at 50 degrees. Going out of the heat into a air con enviroment was fine going the other way after the camera had been in a air con enviroment i always let the camera warm to the enviroment.
Came back with 700 pics anyway !!
