Looking for a discreet urban camera.

I'm developing an interest in urban/street photography and I'm looking to purchase a top end discreet pocket camera. The obviouse choice seems to be the Canon S95 but I'm also drawn to the Olympus XZ-1 (mainly for its 1.8/2.5 lens). The problem is,whilst I have tried the Canon,I've not been able to view/try the Olympus; I understand the XZ-1 is slighly larger and somewhat heavier than the S95 and, as I am unable to do a comparison myself, I would appreciate any input from anybody who has had the oportunity to do so or at least have had a look/feel of the Olympus!

Re: Looking for a discreet urban camera.

I'm a dyed in the wool Canon fan and I have a G7 as my walkabout pocket camera, the s95 is very good but if you are prepared to spend £100 more (the olympus XZ-1) then you could also consider the Canon G12 which was the camera I wished my G7 was. Notice though that I said was and not is, why? well I just read some spec and reviews of the XZ-1 that is one sweet camera and I hate to say it but for urban candids that f1.8 and f2.8 at the tele end (the s95 starts at f2 and drops to f4.7) lens is a big draw. Pretty much puts the G12 in the shade. They all shoot raw which is essential IMO so what would I pick ? Honestly it is a tough call and in your position I would get myself down to my local dealer and try them all in the hands extensively. Heck that Olympus looks nice though As the OP has said any owners out there who could shed some light on the Oly?

Thanks for that, trouble is I cannot get to a high street retailer who has the olympus in stock .
The G12 is just too bulky and heavy to be considered a true pocked camera;I did have the G11 for a time but it really was'nt suitable for that very reason. The S95 is perfect in that respect and the reviews are excellent but..... I have to say I'm not too keen on Canon compacts,I had the G9 for some time but finally just could'nt live with it;excellent at minimum iso but beyond that ,image quality suffered. I know we must expect that with compacts to a greater or lesser degree but Canons are so expensive. The olympus is even more so,but I expect the prices to drop and that lens.......

Re: Looking for a discreet urban camera.

I don't do street photography but if I did I'd definitely want a reticulating LCD, something I find myself using all the time with my G11 - not just being able to place the camera at interesting angles but also to allow easy viewing in bright conditions (G11's screen isn't too bad but angling it into shade helps!)

Re: Looking for a discreet urban camera.

Here's an 'off the wall' suggestion.

Get one of these XA The Original. Very small, discreet, quiet and a good lens. I've got one and they brilliant for stealth photos. Just pull it from your pocket slide the lens shield focus or guess the distance and press the shutter. Even if somone does spot you, the photo will have been taken before they can work out what's happening.

Slap some of this in it KODAK PROFESSIONAL PORTRA 400 Film. It's fast enough to give you a decent depth of field that'll enable you to use some Cartier Bresson techniques.

He was pretty good at street photography.

Re: Looking for a discreet urban camera.

Steve is actually making a good suggestion. I've yet to come across a small digital camera that's entirely suitable for candid photography. There's just too much shutter lag. The best of the rest seems to be the Nikon S10. Because it has a two part body, you can be looking anywhere other than at your subject, and I've got some reasonably good shots with mine. Still, that shutter lag is always waiting to catch you out.

Re: Looking for a discreet urban camera.

Shutter lag's been improving all the time on compacts and is actually not bad at all if you use manual focus and manual settings for aperture/shutter

Re: Looking for a discreet urban camera.

Took the plunge , went for the S95 and very glad that I did so!
What a cracking little powerhouse.
It does the job ,is so small and light that it fits into my shirt pocket and I hardly know its there!
Iq is pretty impressive for a compact and I have no complaints regarding reaction times.
