Lost Mojo ... me too.

I didn't want to intrude on the previous "Mojo" thread but I feel this is the best way to follow up on it, on a personal note.

I haven't quite "lost it" but, and I wonder how many out there may be in the same situation, seems like I have become "saturated" with photography, hopefully temporarily.

That also explains why I haven't been here for a while.

To all of those who suffer the "Lost MoJo" ... join in and let's have a talk.

Re: Lost Mojo ... me too.

I lost my MoJo last February when recovering from an operation, wrote on here in general chat and was told promptly to get off my duff and go shoot some pictures. I now suffer from reflections, I see them everywhere and have no camera. I do find that when things slow down that a good read or search for information on something I haven't quite picked up on concerning photographic techniques, there is just a million of them always helps to keep the wheels spinning. I have been reading about the black & white transition from film to digital with infrared. "I say reading then a little field work is a good start".

Re: Lost Mojo ... me too.

Hey Boofers!
Thanks for your reply ... much appreciated.
Frankly, I have been a little "slow" for the past few weeks; looking back at my thousands of pics (among which few deserve 4 or 5 "stars"), I decided to invest in a piece of software to organize and classify them. I actually ordered Lightroom last week. It's such a mess that it will likely take me weeks to work this out.
That was the first thing which really got me ... the mess!
Then, of course, my photographer's muse sort of disappeared. To make things worse, weather has been very bad with continously and heavily overcast/rainy/cold skies. This time of year should actually be the best for photography around here because of the trees changing colours.
OK, enough complaining ... Back to you.
I realize that my situation certainly isn't quite anything like yours though.
Good ideas you have: read, get info, ... at least that keeps one's mind busy!

Cheers for now ... I'll check this post soon.

Re: Lost Mojo ... me too.

Yeah, I find that going back over my shots and looking at them from a slightly different perspective can kickstart me into re-processing and then going out to find a subject to take with that perspective in mind.

It's the generic things I have a problem with at the moment - like landscapes. Haven't taken one for ages - think I need to get back into hiking and maybe it'll all come back to me. Just need to now find the time!

Re: Lost Mojo ... me too.

When the weather is bad on the days you would have been out with the camera it is demoralising. Happens to me all of the time!

I think you have given a clue in your post

Maybe you need to focus (ugh!) a little more on specific subjects/techniques and reduce the quantity and raise the quality of your pictures?

One of the reasons I fell out of love with video was it was such hard work in PP with sound as well as images to edit. After one holiday to Italy I ended up with close to 3,000 clips to edit. The project is still unfinished seven years on!

Re: Lost Mojo ... me too.

... Not "Lost it" here, but Life, new school for two of the kids, and other things have put the camera on the shelf for a week or two....

I believe you sometimes need to take a break, just to review what you have been doing... and in cases like the above, I will get back to the camera and have new fresh idea's, perhaps revisit things I didnt get quite right, with a new perspective.

Same as most hobbies, sometimes you need to stand back and take an outsiders view to get the bigger picture.

Re: Lost Mojo ... me too.

I lost my desire to do photography for almost a full year. During that time I would read blogs and websites, look at others pictures, look for interesting and unusual styles and techniques so that when I wanted to get involved again I had a whole list of things that I knew I wanted to try.

I also spent a few months finding my way around Lightroom and getting my back catalogue indexed and sorted. When I got the urge back I found that my camera had somehow become faulty and that forced me to replace it, further delaying me getting back behind the camera. I can say that the combination of having time out and coming back with a new camera has kicked started my photography one more, unfortunately as is usually the case, life has now placed other demands on my time and I find myself struggling to get out despite wanting too.

To add my pennies worth into this, the old adage, 'everything in moderation' comes to mind. There is no given rule as to how much photography you should be doing, unless it’s your business, sometimes a break away helps, it has helped me on a number of occasions.

Mark,
I am not sure how but what you are saying rings a bell here: I love TAKING photos and uploading them to the computer to see them on the 22" screen. That is where it should end, but that is likely not going to happen. That said, it reminds me of a thread somewhere (here maybe?) where this fellow said that he did very little PP and that he diligently tried to make his photos look the way he wanted them, right from the box. With the advent of the digital age, we seem to fall in this sort of carelesness, knowing that we can shoot as many pics as we want and not worry about production costs, as it was (is) with film cameras. I certainly fell into the trap myself!
(Am I off subject or what?) ...
Anyway, I agree that spending time with alternate/different aspects of photography, especially with things which we often neglect, could be a good start to kick me back into gear.
Thanks for the reply!

Dabhand:
I used to go out, no matter what the weather, as long as I could get there! Now, I guess I am becoming "saturated".
But, and thanks to you for the reminder which I approached in the previous post with Markulous, I seriously need to get back to the "basics" and, as you mention: to focus (ugh!) a little more on specific subjects/techniques and reduce the quantity and raise the quality of your pictures.
It is also a matter of "frame of mind" ... getting some energizing or some passion back. It'll come, hopefully soon.
Thanks for the feedback.

That is very true!
Looking at the big picture is something I have completely been missing! and maybe that's why I became fed up!
Very timely hint ... and appreciated.

Re: Lost Mojo ... me too.

Steve,
As a matter of fact, I did order Lightroom and planning to organize my mess, which has really been a problem here; actually, it could well be one of major contributors to my ongoing "indifference" or "lethargic state".
That's most probably a very good therapeutic start!
I appreciate your reply.

Kevin: good adage, and the problem is we never seem to follow the advice.
No, photography is not my business and again the "take a break" comment comes in in a timely manner.

Simpbow:

This sounds so familiar! Loading up the hard drives to a point where I had too much PP to do but still went out and took more!
And new computer ... I have had this particular issue as well. Why? Because I "needed" more processing power to PP all that mess. Now, the computer runs fine and I have tons of storage which will soon be organized!!!
Cheers and thanks!
