Luna eclipse 21st Feb

Just in case some people have not heard. There is a total eclipse of the moon on the morning of the 21st Feb that will be visible from the UK. It is at maximum at 03.20 am in the UK.

NASA - Total Lunar Eclipse: February 20, 2008

Thes is also an anular eclipse of the sun this Thursday (7th) that will be visible from the Antarctica and southern regions of the Pacific Ocean - I guess I will miss that one

No just like Summmerleft I plan to be tucked up in bed - not the same one of course

I do not have the right lens. I have tried this before when the time was more reasonable using digiscoping but that is so hard to get the focus right I was not satisfied with the pictures. You need a lot of magnification to get anything reasonable. Even your 100-400 may not give you a large image. If I was going to try anything I would probably set the camera up on a tripod and take a series of pictures at say 10 minute intervals and then blend them in Photoshop to show the whole eclipse in one go. Just not at 3.00 am. in the morning though.

Re: Luna eclipse 21st Feb

Lucky me.
The eclipse will begin at 6:14 p.m. as the moon lies just above the eastern horizon. The moon will be totally eclipsed from 7:23 p.m. to 8:44 p.m.

I would be interested to know how the images turned out with the camera ans lens you have. I am still trying to work out what tele zoom to get and each time I think I have made up my mind I find another reason to change it. If there was only one lens it would be so simple !!!

Not an eclipse picture, but to give you an idea of what can be acieved, Rob Barron used a 300mm + 2x converter for this shot

Re: Luna eclipse 21st Feb

Not bad at all

With the moon having an angular diameter of about 0.5 degrees anf the 400mm having a field of view of about 6 degrees quite a lot of cropping must have been done and the detail still looks quite good. Impressive.

I've got a 300mm and no converter but I might stay up for this all the same.

How would a v. long exposure exposure go down do you think? Rubbish??

I am no expert but I have just done a rough calculation. Apparent diameter of the moon = 0.5 degrees approx. The earth rotates 360 degrees in 24 hours or 1440 minutes = 0.25 degrees / min. These numbers do not sound good for sharp pictures with long exposures. This is why telescopes have rotating mounts synchronised with the earth rotation.

With a 300 mm the moon is going to be quite small in your field of view. I would check what it looks like when you can next see the moon well and decide if it is worth it.

Re: Luna eclipse 21st Feb

Sweet_sac, you don't need a long exposure at all... just the opposite, in fact, since the moon is a very bright object.

The last time I did some moon shots, I got some acceptable results with 1/125 sec, f/5.6, using a 300mm lens.

Maybe I'll have my 400mm lens at the next lunar eclipse in 2010...

Thanks mate, and yes your correct, it was a big crop... for displaying online it's fine due to the size restrictions, but I wasn't going to try printing this one out!

Re: Luna eclipse 21st Feb

Thanks for showing my moon shot Graham. Yes it is cropped down but I am trying to remember how much. I would say the moon occupied about a third to a half of the frame in total but there was plenty of detail available out of that as you can see.

I haven't got my 300mm now as I sold it but I shall have a go with my 100-400mm and 2x convertor so that's 800mm and x 1.6 so 1,280mm lens at f11 with the 2-stop drop from the convertor. I think I should still be able to get something worth having as shutter speed isn't an issue.

As Shipwack mentioned, the moon is very bright and so can be shot at surprisingly fast speeds. Bear in mind though that at full eclipse, the moon will be considerably less bright, taking on the reddish-brown tint as seen in Gary's lovely shot. But no matter, you'll get a plenty sharp shot even at 1/15th second. Just don't go trying a 5 second exposure shot as you'll find you get an oval instead of a circle due to the movement of the moon, even in that amount of time.

Look forward to seeing what people not too attached to their duvet can come up with. Our West-coast American friends like Sotelo should get the best opportunity as they will have just had dinner and be ready to snap away

As for me, I'll be out until late as my wife and I are going out for a special dinner to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary. So, forgive me if I get side-tracked, some things are far more important than a lunar eclipse

Cheers,
Rob

Re: Luna eclipse 21st Feb

Thought I'd put up the montage I made from the last one, and as you can see, the sharpness is much reduced when the moon is red due to the combination of the longer exp. required whilst the moon is still moving.

Re: Luna eclipse 21st Feb

Here in Ont. Canada, the eclipse begins at 8:47pm, full eclipse at 10:01 pm.. so i'll be out with the older 2 kids watching.. but my pics are NOTHING like what you all can do.. so i'll be lucky to shoot in the right direction of the moon.. But... i'll try anyways!

This being said.. I have a stupid question, how cold is *too* cold to take my camera out in? It's -15c (-5F). Is that ok?

Re: Luna eclipse 21st Feb

-15C !!!! Sod the camera I would thing about me !!!

From a rather soft Englishman

I was speaking to someone who had just finished a race to the north pole I assume colder than you are at present. He used a camera all the way and provided he kept it warm so the batteries did not freeze said it worked OK. If the camera got really cold it stopped working. Soor I do not know the temperature. Perhaps a Google search may help

Re: Luna eclipse 21st Feb

Best to allow the camera to acclimatise to the new temperature for a while before going out and as AQ said, keep the batteries in an inside pocket to keep as warm as possible.

Always best to acclimatise when going from hi>lo or lo>hi temps and humidity.
