Mac OSX Workflow Help

Hi everyone,

I'm new to this site so firstly hello. I've been a casual observer for a while and have taken the plunge to join. I'm a photographer based in Dorset who enjoys studio work as this is the direction I"m hoping to launch a business into.

I'm having a little trouble with managing my ever increasing number of photographs. Previously, I was using iPhoto to manage my pictures but this has become a real pain. I shoot in RAW and iPhoto will display the RAW files as JPG's. I edit my photo's using Photoshop CS5 but there's no full-circle method of editing a picture in iPhoto using CS5 and then saving back to iPhoto without lot of manual intervention.

So... I'm looking for an alternative way to manage the photographs on my mac and be able to edit them using CS5. I'd like a program that's non-destructive to files where I can edit the photo in CS5 and when I click save, it's saved back to my photo manager.

What do you guys use for this and what suggestions can you offer?

Many thanks in advance.

Adam

Hi Adam

Either Adobe Lightroom or Apple Aperture would suits your needs.

Re: Mac OSX Workflow Help

Thank you!! Will these both allow me to open the file into CS5 and then save back to either Aperture or LR?

The answer is yes, Set PS as your editor in aperture and I am sure you can do the same in LR. Question, have you used bridge, it is part of photoshop and if your a real sharp guy you can achieve everything you need right there. As nice as iphoto is
for me there's no place like photoshop. Go to file and select browse, it will open bridge, or go to your applications folder and find it there, drag the icon to your dock and click it on. I would try that out before spending any more money on something that does the same thing.

Thanks for the advice Boofers. I do all my work in photoshop so I'll give bridge a try. I didn't realise I had it and that's what it did!!!

Re: Mac OSX Workflow Help

I don't know about Aperture but if you use LR for Raw conversion there are so many available adjustments you may find you only need CS5 now and then.

By raw conversion, do you mean just processing the image using basic settings or converting batches to jpg for customers use?

I use Aperture 3 and it is perfect for editing and massive file storage hands down

Re: Mac OSX Workflow Help

I hate to be a naysayer, but I've tried hard with Aperture and can't really get what I want from it. The batch mode update is far too slow, even though, or possibly because, I've told it to leave my images in place. To be fair, Lightroom didn't ring my bell, either.

On a Mac, of course, you can highlight any amount of directories, right click and choose 'Open...' to use Preview. Coupled with a directory structure that meets my needs, this is pretty near as useful to me as a heavyweight image library manager.
