Manual focus tips (while Im waiting)

I awaiting delivery of a 50mm 1.8 and as I have a d40 will need to manual focus.

I had a go on my kit lens and was quite put off with my results.

I wonder if the kit lens is a poor bit of kit to try and learn this technique.

Should I sort of saw back and forth or is it a case of creeping up to focus?

I saw back and forth alpina , you will do it with ease with a bright 1.8 lens

The only thing is the focus screen on digital tend to be plain where as on the old film you could get a matt fresnel (I think they were called) But if the eyesight is good you will have no problems m8.

Re: Manual focus tips (while Im waiting)

Most of the times I find manual focus giving better results. So practise makes perfect and a 50mm will definitely give you some nice results. No doubt

Don't understand why you will NEED to "manual focus" because you have a D40.

The D40 does not have an AF motor built into the body.

Yep I think the kit lens is the wrong one to practice with. Tried again this morning and its awful. I imagine the 1.8 will be damped.....hope so

Might seem a bit obviouse, but have you got your viewfinder set up correctly? I've never found a problem using manual focus with any of my lenses!

Re: Manual focus tips (while Im waiting)

Can you get your hands on an old manual focus SLR. A lot had split image rangefinders built into the focusing screens and were set-up for manual focus (there was no other way then ). It's a bit more obvious than modern DSLR's that are setup more for auto focus.

Besides, it it still works, it's quite fun to take a roll on 35mm film for nostagia's sake.

And it can be more exciting to have to wait to see the results, DSLR's are just so immediate
