Megapixal and Superzoom madness.

When are manufacturers going to get their act together and start producing compact cameras more with photography in mind and less as fashion items?
I see that Canons replacement for the erstwhile excellent G9 is the G10 ( surprise) . The G9 has just about everything that you would want in a DSLR companion compact, lots of functions and good picture quality.....providing the iso is kept low ,the shutter speed high and there is plenty of light, it just has too many megapixals and noise can be very intrusive.
What does Canon do with its replacement ? Use a slightly larger sensor and saturate it with a further 3 megapixals.
Same goes for the superzooms, longer and longer lenses with the added compomises and more megapixals with more noise.
The Fuji S 9600 was ( in my opinion ) just about the best, if not the best , bridge camera yet. Its picture quality ,right across the range, is superb and its low light performance impressive. What does Fuji do with its replacement, the S100fs? They increase the zoom range of the lens and thus introduce artifactes that are not present in the 9600, increase the megapixals from 9 to 11 introducing more noise and up the iso sensitivity to a totally useless 10,000! I think the same pretty well applies to all the manufacturers; I think its time they sacked the marketing men and gave precedence to the engineers. We might then end up with a choice of campacts utilising decent sized ( compact wise ) unsaturated sensors (I reckon 8 megapixal should be the maximum) with reduced shutter lag, lower minimum apertures, sensible zoom ranges and useable iso ratings!
I like compacts, they are so useful for slipping into a pocket at those times when carting a Dslr about can be inconvenient , and should this ever happen, then I for one will be queing up to buy one!

Punters fall for Mega Pixels = More profit ..... that simple

Yup, as Dave says it's the marketing man's megapixels! But it's not just Compacts as one recent review of the Canon 50D concluded:
Quote:
High ISO performance worse than 40D
Reduced dynamic range in the shadow areas compared to EOS 40D
Per-pixel detail not as good as on good 10 or 12 megapixel cameras
Yet you'll still get those banging on about how great it is with more pixels!

Re: Megapixal and Superzoom madness.

So often now 'improvements' are there just because they can be done - not because they will improve the camera.

For instance, video facility in a dSLR will not appeal to many, it is there because it can be done, not because there is a demand for it.

Re: Megapixal and Superzoom madness.

Samleo - I couldn't agree more.

I still have an old Canon G2 (4MP) which is capable of good results and has a wonderful flip-out-and-rotate LCD screen which is incredibly useful for low-down or overhead shots. Later on in the G-series, Canon decided to scrap the moveable screen for a larger fixed onee, which is nowhere near as versatile.

More recently we've had the Canon 50D. Good though it may be (especially if you want to shoot movies ), the high-ISO performance is not as good as the 40D (according the the reviews I've seen so far). So you have 50% more pixels and 50% bigger files, but no improvement in image quality.

As already said, Megapixals became a marketing race and the manufacturers are finding it difficult to extract themselves from the game that they started. It is, however, quite ridiculous, and somehow we need to spread the message that, for most purposes, 10MP is more than enough and 15MP is worse.

BTW I've seen a few previews of the Panasonic Lumix G1 - the first micro-four-thirds camera that has interchangeable lenses like an SLR but without the mirror, prism and optical viewfinder, and I'm 100% convinced that this is the future for most serious (or even quite happy) photographers.

The next step is to get rid of the fake pentaprism hump, but remember that nobody liked the Sierra at first - until a few years later every other car looked like it.

cant really request that in a sense that there is a market for it, us serious/enthusiastic photographers =DSLR/Interchangeable lenses etc..., funky teenagers that go out on fri nights and show off the latest compact cameras=latest, funky digital compact cameras, at the end of the day its all about business we all know that, so yes, manufacturers will keep upgrading cameras even tho it may not be any better than a previous model but hey gotta go with the flow

Re: Megapixal and Superzoom madness.

I quite agree about the micro -four-thirds, the only draw back I think will be the crop factor! However, I also think its high time we stopped comparing angles of view with 35mm equivelents; Digital is a whole new ball game and relevent specs should be kept "in-house". It won,t be too far into the future when new aspiring photographers will not even know what the film 35mm format is/was or even why the formats are compared!

Problem is that the crop factor is not consistent, so the only way of knowing how a lens will perform in terms of its angle of view is to compare it with the 35mm equivalent which is constant.

For instance, do you know what range a 14-54 four thirds lens will cover?

Re: Megapixal and Superzoom madness.

I have to disagree,Dabhand. Surely all we need to know is the range of angles of view that a particular lens/compact covers. You are right though, I have no idea what the 14-54 four thirds lens will cover, thats my whole point, but I would know if its range was stated in angles of view!

Moving away from cameras, if something is 'digital' or 'organic' it must be better

Apparently this is a 'digital' door lock
