Mission creep

I am nearing the end of this years project, to photograph all the historic buildings at the Chiltern Open Air Museum, from most sides and inside where allowed.
That has given me 135 images.
Someone suggested I put them on a DVD to view on the TV.
I now have a few puzzles, having converted a set to 8 bit jpegs at A4 dimensions, would I need a specific size? Will portrait format fit?
Do I need to change the aspect ratio as a wide screen TV is different to my cameras ratio?
I expect it is obvious to most people but I am not adventurous and just save my images as full size tiffs on 3 HDs and A4 size jpegs on another.
Charles.

Re: Mission creep

First thing to do is to check the spec of your DVD player to see what file formats it will handle. I think most will accept jpeg.

Many TVs have aspect ratio choices or an auto setting which might be the best starting point. AFAIK portrait aspect pictures should get automatically resized.

I think a degree of suck it and see to determine what size your pictures should be. In practice I don't think it will matter too much. Stick to your normal aspect ratio and if necessary get the TV to adapt to it rather than trying to change the ration to suit the TV 900x600 pixels is a good starting point and you can try some either side of this both landscape and portrait.

My TV has an SD card slot, but will not display images that have been edited!

Re: Mission creep

Years ago, we'll a few anyway I used to just drop them in a movie maker in the order I needed. I had a small App. That made the picture move around other then just sit still. On That 150 ppi worked anything less would pixelate when moving. Now days everything plays pictures. I just run a batch of jegs and copy the to a cd or DVD and they play either by pressing arrow or letting machine show as slide show.

Re: Mission creep

If you use Windows Live Movie maker. It is free if you have windows.

Convert your tiffs to jpeg. Leave them as what you have them. The program does the rest etc.

Import the jpegs to movie maker. Set the aspect you want for the movie and TV region (PAL)

There's some set movie themes which do some fades. If you want to do more you can make the images pan and stuff.

Then just make the movie. You can then view in windows Media Player, and once happy burn a DVD to play on a TV.

Or make a short clip and post on YouTube.

Eg I did this with some butterfly shots in 2011. You can add music too if you wish.

YouTube Video
ERROR: If you can see this, then YouTube is down or you don't have Flash installed.

Re: Mission creep

Thanks Graham, just had a look, my TV has a SD slot as well, so thats another alternative, I will try that as well, and see what happens on the scale issue.

Boofers, I have burnt some images to CDs to use on computers in the past but not to DVDs for the TV so didnt know if it was the same technique.

ChrisA. Nice movie, if mine is anywhere near I will be pleased. I have Windows live movie maker on my machine so will have a go next week, ( going to a heavey horses ploughing demonstration tomorrow so will have a load of images to download and sort).

Thanks all for the advice, I will have a go. Charles.

Re: Mission creep

You should be able to buy DVDs for around 20p each if you get a spindle of 50 or 100. I now use printable ones so I can print a picture on them representitive of the content.

You will be paying through the nose in there. Look on line for the best deal. I can't give you the suppliers I've used in the past as I still have not got my old hard drive back from my computer man yet and so have not got access to my bookmarks But I bet 7 Day Shop will be cheaper than Staples even if they are not the cheapest on the net.

I have burned hundreds of DVD's using AppGeeker DVD Creator software. Extremely easy to use and fast. Accepts just about any format (video/audio/image/subtitle).

Check: How to Burn WMV to DVD on Mac/PC with Original Quality

In any case do a very short movie and make notes along the way as you learn.

For simple movies it is hard to beat Windows Movie Maker.

Re: Mission creep

Thanks for that Pasquale, and welcome, to the site.
I have just finished converting a set of images to jpeg and resizing down to A4 size (3994 X 2421 pix).
I am now going to put them in Windows Movie Maker and have a play to see what I can do.
Just looked at the link, interesting.....
