Models - rates

Hi looking to try some work with a model. Having not done this before unsure what a model would cost. Is it a set fee or an hourly rate.

any advise and guidance would be great. Also where best to get a model?

Thanks

Dave

Re: Models - rates

Try looking at Model Mayhem.

If you don't mind using an inexperienced model who wants to build up a portfolio, time for photos is not an uncommon arrangement. More experienced models are unlikely to swap time for photos, and will probably have an hourly rate.

You can hire a studio and often the studio will be able to provide a model (at extra cost) which can be good value as if the model is experienced he/she will be able to give you a lot of help. Also the studio will have the lighting you need.

You can always enroll on a portrait course. Models and advice from a photographic pro are all in - and the studio and lighting - everything you need.

Make up is an important thing too. Some models will do their own, but if you want to go through different set ups it can take time to re-do. You can also get make-up artists on Model Mayhem - and again some will be free if you give them a copy of the photos with their work on show.

Think about a model release too. These will be included (usually) with a studio or course, but if you are going alone it might be a good idea to have one available.

Re: Models - rates

Excellent advice from Graham. I am a member of the Camera Club Studio Group so we often photograph models. We have probably tried most arrangements and all have advantages and disadvantages. Certainly our experience with models who are still training and need to expand their portfolio has worked qute well. However, if neither model or photographer has much idea of poses, lighting etc, then success is down to luck. Fortunately at a club, we usually have some experienced photographers who can advise others and the model. On the occassions we have paid out and hired a reasonably experienced model, success has been much greater as the models can adopt the poses you require easily or will provide different poses if you do not know what you want. My best shots are mainly with professional models but that is probably because I an not good on suggesting poses.

We always use model release forms but limit our use to non-commercial. If you need the pictures for commercial use, you may need an agreement which ensures that the model benefits from future sales.

Also stick to models that are over 18 or refer to the NSPCC site for advice on younger models.

Dave

This can be incorporated in the release. Words to the effect of 'I am over 18..' or 'I certify that I am over 18..'

If you have any doubts don't use the model. You might want to also consider the use of a chaperone if you are going to working on your own.

Re: Models - rates

A chaperone is a good idea and some models will bring one with them, the other thing would be to bring either your wife or another female relative to make the model, and yourself more comfortable.
