Monopods heads

I am about to buy, I think, a Velbon Pro Pod 8 Carbon Fibre Monopod as I need it as tall and light as possible, what is the best type of head for monopod use and why, given weight is a criteria.

Your advice would be appreciated

Re: Monopods heads

I use a Manfrotto 234RC2. It allows quick changes from landscape to portrait orientation and is useful if you are using a lens with no rotating mount. Even if you have lenses with rotating mounts I think the QR is worth it to prevent lengthy/fiddly mounting and removal from the monopod.

It is available with no QR plate for around 12-15, and with the RC2 system for about 10 extra.

It is specifically designed for monopods and is smaller and lighter than a ball head or pan/tilt head.

For me it was a no-brainer as I was using the RC2 QR system anyway.

Agreed, the camera can also be mounted so that it tilts up and down instead of portrait / landscape. It's also very strong. It holds my OM2 with a front heavy tamron sp 70-210 beer can lens with ease.

Yea I know - I still like film photography, particularly B&W.

Sadly not - I get up for work at 5am, so the wine is reserved for weekends.

The weekends I'm not working, that is

I find it useful taking portrait shots of my son doing athletics. With out the head I would end up poking the guy 5 foot away in the ribs

LOL. I only use a monopod for a 300mm lens which comes with a tripod collar so it's easy to move from landscape to portrait in seconds
