Re: more on prints

Are you using the right printer profile for your choice of paper?

Are you using a colour balanced monitor?

Are you using proper ink designed for your printer and not cheap refill muck?

If you're using a closed system - i.e. your computer and your printer, and your prints are coming out a little dark, a simple trick to try is to just lighten them a bit before printing. Sounds obvious I know. A curves adjustment by dragging the middle of the curve up slightly is worth a try.

Re: more on prints

I use cheap MUCK in my printers in CISS systems.

However I have a Datacolor Spyder pro to calibrate my screen and use a Datacolor Spyder print photocolorimter to calibrate my prints.
After years of scratching my head and pulling my hair out my prints match my screen.

Buying this kit allows me to use MUCK in my printer and cheap MUCK paper as well.

Great prints every time but not the cheapest solution.

Re: more on prints

I would recommend one but at 96.89 for the screen calibrator and 238.50 for the print calibrator they ain't cheap. ( Don't buy the Spyder studio you pay 33 for the case and get the same )

I've resisted it for a long time but I recently obtained an old photo printer that you can't get profiles for and in the space of minutes I can now get a spot on A3 print.

I wouldn't have bothered with the printer before geting the kit.

I can only comment on Spyder kit as that's what I plumped for after much research.

Re: more on prints

I can recommend the Spyder3 Pro for screen calibration (Windows and Mac) but I've not tried the Spyder3 Print.

The Spyder3 Pro creates a monitor profile that is automatically loaded at boot-up. You have to ensure that no ICC-enabled programs (i.e. most good image editors) try to load it (or any other profile) again, or you'll get weird effects through 'double-profiling'. Your screen is already profiled and should display correctly in any application.

Once you know that the monitor is displaying colours and tones as it should, you have a reference with which to compare your printer output. See if you can adjust the printer driver settings to match, before you spend on printer profilers.

Re: more on prints

You load the software and then plug in the spyder, you run the software and give your monitor a profile name.

I called my profile Samsung, then told it I'd be using it without the suction cup just hanging it against the screen.

Tell the software to leave all the settings as standard hang the spyder in contact with the screen image and hit next.

Job done

simple as that.

Then if you wish you can use manual settings in the printer driver to adjust brightness and colour and after a little messing you will get very close.

The spyder print calibrates the printout in a similar way.

Re: more on prints

It's very easy to use - you just follow the instructions and do as you're told on-screen! It will then create the profile and Windows/OS X will use that as the default, so your screen will be display everything correctly at boot-up.

What isn't quite so easy is setting up colour management in some image editors. You have to ensure that the editing application doesn't try to load the profile again - it is already loaded and being used, so loading it again will apply the corrections twice!
