Motivate me

Hello all,

Been inactive for an age and have increasingly been looking at the camera sat on my desk and thinking "I should use that"

So - I'm open to all ideas and suggestions of subject matter at this unpromising time of year. With your help hopefully I'll begin to contribute again!

Cheers,

MB

Re: Motivate me

I think that most people go through inactive periods for a number of reasons.

Good to see you back on the forum, and my suggestion is to see if there are any events or shows happening near you that you would have an interest in, like Silkstone's recent shots of a model railway, or a steam rally, County Fair, or a wildlife centre.

Re: Motivate me

Overcast days are great for taking Mono's, or portraits, as you lose all the harsh shadows.

I see you have the 50mm f/1.4. Try grabbing one of the family & get them to sit side on to a large north facing window (or any direction if overcast). Now using f/1.4, lock the focus on the eyes , recompose & shoot. You should be able to get shots like this, no problem :-

Now let's play at filling the shadows in . If you have someone else to help you, try grabbing a large piece of white card, or even a newspaper opened up & use it on opposite side of model to window to bounce light back in to the shadow areas.

Lastly play with different background. An old bedsheet taped to the wall can work perfectly. Hey , if it's white you can tape it over the window for an even softer light.

If you have no-one to shoot, use normal household objects on a table instead, placed by the window. Just enjoy how great natural light can create such wonderful tones across your subject

Re: Motivate me

Great time of the year to record some wild weather. You cannot be that far from the coast. Also grab opportunities to take dawn shots with mist or frost; you do not have to get up that early this time of the year.

Re: Motivate me

MB, what are you interested in? Whatever your interests are, try centering your photography around that, e.g. golf, stamp collecting (), trains, cats, walking, biking etc.. You are more likely to get motivated if you are photographing something that you have a passion for.

I was trying to motivate myself the other day, and the following line of thought might work for you ... rather than wondering what you can take a picture of, instead wonder what you can make a pleasing image of. The slight difference in the way of thinking about it could help to spur the imagination ... and I will hopefully be following my own advice, as I too have been inactive

Re: Motivate me

Been a bit inactive too. But last night as I was driving Simon to his guitar lesson, as we were sitting by the traffic lights, he commented on a nice gateway, so from that I thought it would be nice to take some detailed shots of local domestic architecture. I thought so many people are replacing doors with the uPVC models, it would be nice to document some old ones.

Re: Motivate me

Nice idea whipspeed

My 50/1.4 fell out my bag and is now in the camera repair shop in the sky, need to update my kit list

OK. I reckon architecture is something I've never really had a go at to any extent so I'll start there. Watch this space

This is the best time of year! From now through till March/April. With a longer golden hour and MUCH softer light not to mention sunsets and sunrises occurring at much more reasonable times it's the perfect time of year to get 'scaping!

Re: Motivate me

Glad to be of help. I'm making a note of things I've seen, ready for my first outing, first shot being an alleyway between terrace houses with nice gate. I'm also off to Oundle on Friday to meet a friend for lunch and there are some superb buildings there.

Quite agree OP, just think of them mornings, lying next to the local pond at 6-30 am and waiting for those first golden rays to break through the mist.....
and the call of the badgers returning to earth , the strut of the moor hen as she Shepard's her chicks .

Ah B#ll#cks.........No ,I'll just have another 5 mins....................

Re: Motivate me

Right then!

You live in Northumberland - one of the most photogenic parts of the UK. It's a shame there's been so much rain lately, but when it stops (later, maybe ) go out and take photos of anything and everything around where you live. Street scenes, buildings, landscapes, people, cars, shops... anything! They may not win any prizes, but in a few years' time they will be more interesting that the usual holiday shots and sunsets.

They will be snapshots in time, and absolutely unique.

Re: Motivate me

As I type this I'm looking at what is a rather good sunrise in which I'd planned to go out and participate! {sigh}

But I had to visit Sheffield yesterday and the combo of sun/cloud made me pleased I'd taken both my cameras with me as I meandered there and back (don't you just love GPSr to steer you through housing estates)

(Sunrise has now taken a turn for the worse - cloud swallowing it up. Phew! )

Re: Motivate me

We had a great creamy coloured full moon setting at around 5.30AM this morning.By the time I got out with my camera I had missed it ,but i intend to try again tomrrow.
I just find the moonrise and moonset tables on google. You just type in your latitude and longitude and the times for each day are calculated.
After that you can carry on to your local pond and await sunrise.
Alternately, as towershot said, turn over and have another hours kip LOL
