Movies and photo's

Do a lot of you get on a kick every once in a while and like to put family DVD's together. I have for 6 of the last ten, now I have been getting requests from every where, nieces nephews and kids, brothers sisters, on and on. When we looked at the software we had, we found that apple has gone barn burning again. What do you use in software, I have been thinking of adding windows to my machine just for making movies. Would like a good conversation on the whole pale of water to put out the fire. Thanks

Re: Movies and photo's

Hi Boofers, I use Pinnacle Studio ultimate collection HD for my gaming exploits, its a damn sight cheaper than Adobe Premier and if you want to use it for family dvd's etc its quite useful, you can add extra sound tracks and alter the volume levels of each track, it has a large selection of transitions and wipes and is pretty simple to use.
this first video is in low res for youtube and the second one is also on youtube but the resolution can be changed in YT settings to HD.
I have also produced some HD quality testimonial promotional video's with it which were fine and for under 100.00 the software works fine for me.

I use Serif MoviePlus - does all that I want and not expensive. Like you I just like to play around with movie once in a while.

Re: Movies and photo's

No flash on the pad I am on,,I found them and book marked them. This is about the same price apple is trying to get me to pay with their little tricks. But I looked it over and it has what I used with my olf film mini DV format which they took out from-export. That made me lose the quality I was used to. Pinnacle looks good and I would have to have windows. Thats like having a two headed computer. Gotta go.

Re: Movies and photo's

Serif movieplus looks good also. It would cost about 300 american dollars to get windows and one movie editor. It might be fun to have windows and slowly collect some of the things I've done with out. Which leads to another question, which windows. People here at work,,(i'm at lunch) tell me that XP will soon loose support. Is windows seven a good choice, I use a slim version of 7 here at work for documents and that's all. I don't know anything about 8.

Re: Movies and photo's

I#ve not done any video for a very long time now, but found that Pinnacle Studio 9 (probably moved on in the numbers game now) was very easy to use, but for the serious user had a couple of very annoying things in it. Adobe Premiere Elements was the one I converted to. Better ultimately, but steep learning curve.

For average use I'd look at Pinnacle, although iMovie 11 gets good reviews and Cyberlink PowerDirector 9 deluxe too.

Re: Movies and photo's

idvd was the dvd burning barrel for I movie, it no longer comes with the ilife software. As far as I know compressor will do it. I use to have final cut pro and Dvd studio. Both will not work with intel chips and noy up grades. I managed to get idvd loaded version 7.1.2 the very last one. It works but I don't know for how long. If I buy final cut it will not burn dvd's and their is some problems with apple software not putting out blu-ray. It't their software not mine, I don't trust any body who walks away from what they sell you and take it with them. I just want a simple edit to interface with my other programs. I like that. Adobe elements premiere is one I have considered.

Re: Movies and photo's

In the past I have used Pinnacle Studios 9 and also Adobe Premiere but sadly neither seem compatible with my current Windows 7. Many years ago I recorded many analogue videos of my family and digitised, edited and recorded on CD(DVD format). The last was recorded 10 years ago and all 15 CD/DVD's are now unusable. If you do use DVD's make sure you keep the original files on HDD and backed up as I did not. Recently I have digitised the analogue videos again and have installed Video Pad Video Editor which I have not really tried yet but it was free so it may be worth checking it out.

I need to still be able to watch the videos on my TV so my most recent project was to find a solution. I have now bought and set up a Raspberry Pi which reads the videos from my PC (via the local network) as well as having access to the internet. I can control the Raspberry Pi using my smart phone so can now view and control these videos from my armchair. The Raspberry Pi is very small and hides behind the TV.

I run windows 7 on my pc and find it is great, it just works. Windows 8 on my laptop is a proper pain in the ass and some progs will not install on it yet. You know there is something wrong with an operating system when you have to google how to turn it off!!!!!!!

Geez that's funny and sad. I need to run some long movie clips and sound while converting to a quality export. Then try IDvD and for awhile I'll be happy if apple comes out with answer.

Dave, I have keep my DVD vob files intact on an external hard drive and they still burn to a disc. They are 8 to 10 years old and work. I have 2 drives for all of this separate from photo adventure. Sorry to hear your work went dry. I am hoping for the best. So far the research I have done says the stainless steel wire recorders from old are out lasting everything.

Family video and photo's are one of the best open love fest to have playing on the TV when having a get together or reunion. I know you love your guy's cause you show pictures of them and talk about them, we know we're like a weird part of your family you talk too.

Anyway, when I got home tonight from work, the wife had all ready made up a 15 minute movie, dropped it on the iDVD icon and it burned and played on the TV. For now I will try to find the best answer to a problem that apple made us go thru. Thanks to all of us who ask questions on the forums to support each other to learn what will help us live our time the best way, with out a lot of problems.

I cant disagree with that. Of course such videos would be a bore to non-family members but family members love seeing them and, if it is only annual reunion, many of the videos are thus not seen for many years. My 25 yr old son is keen on these and wants his regular girlfriend to see them now I have recovered them. However, my daughter, still does not want her new husband to see many of them though she is happy to see them herself with other family members.

Re: Movies and photo's

I too have used Pinnacle Studio on Windows XP/7, for the simple kind of videos (family) that I have made and it seems to do all that I want. A friend has been using Adobe Premier on Mac and he says there are some changes that he is not happy with. I don't know if he will continue to use it. Depending on the complexity of the editing you need, there might be some open-sourced programs out there that can work on the Mac. The difficulty is finding one that supports the Mac .MOV video format even though that is just a wrapper for mpeg4 I believe.

If your Mac is powerful enough you can run a virtual machine on it to enable another OS like Windows on the Mac, so you don't have to have the expense of buying a complete computer. I've seen Windows XP running quite nicely on the Mac.

Windows Live Movie Maker - Free.

Works well especially for photos as a slideshow. Simple editing too - use it for my clips.

Graham, you can run windows on a mac as a stand alone OS. Intel chips and the new way of life for apple brought all that. Look up Boot camp, it helps set up partitions and so forth. I guess with all the things to think about now I will wait and see if they release a version of final cut. I read they were and then give it a try maybe. I need to study the work flow of having two OS systems for just photo's and a few movies every once in awhile as none of this effects my photography.

Re: Movies and photo's

Interesting Boofers. I have been playing with the idea of building a "hackintosh" which is effectively a Mac OS running on specially selected PC hardware. I just wanted to get at some Mac programs but I do not think that I would be able to make enough use of it to justify the cost of buying a Mac.

Working the other way round using Boot Camp looks like Apple's solution, however, using a Virtual Machine inside the Mac OS allows you to start and stop Windows without rebooting - it opens up the other OS (Windows) in another window, just like any Mac application / program.
