Do we really want to shoot movies in our still cameras? what do you think, this time next year it seems every camera made will have this facility

Re: Movies or Stills

Having shunned movies for the last few decades, I'm now hooked. It has opened up a whole new avenue for me, and I'm loving it (apart from the disk space it consumes!).

But if I want the option of stills or movies, I have to cart around the 40D + lenses and the HF-S100 + a couple of Raynox lenses, and that's a pain. If someone combined both options in one camera, that would be great (for me). The 5DII probably comes close to this but doesn't have all the facilities of a dedicated movie camera, and it's more expensive.

So yes, I hope the trend continues and that two-into-one does go. However, if you'd asked me the same question a few months ago I'd have said that movies on a still camera were a complete waste of time and I'd never bother with them!

Never used the movie function on any of my cameras;I would rather have the resources spent on other improvments to essential functions, thats why I,m selling my Nikon and going Sony!

Re: Movies or Stills

Not interested in moving pictures, principally as I struggle to get anything half decent in still ones (and it's a whole new skillset to learn)

I guess it's handy for when you want to capture the aliens invading - but I'd probably forget - and anyway with the human race suborned who'd be around to see it?!

The Dslr is the wrong shape for a movie camera Iv'e tried it and its like driving a car sideways, sitting 90 degrees to the windscreen! but I expect you could get used it. I think in both cases a dedicated format is better than hybrid facilities in either.

I always use a tripod for movies, so the shape doesn't really matter. It might encourage me to use a tripod for stills too!

Re: Movies or Stills

The movies handed down from generations are silent in my family, but we're very happy to have them. I imagine that any off spring will be just as happy to have the ones I leave no matter where they came from.
So far I have used 4 different recording formats for video. My wife wanted both slr and video so she has a rebel T1i, I know about the 20 frames and we don't care. It seems to fall in line with what we have going and her slr side performs very very well. Aside from all that I can see all cameras coming out with this addishion and only those who complained about film over digital will still be angry.

Re: Movies or Stills

I use the movie mode on my compact for short snapshots with a little bit of local sound, usually when I am on holiday. Having this facility on the still camera ovoids me having to fork out a sustantial amount of cash for a movie camera I wouldn't use very often
Just as an aside I have tried digiscoping and when using the camera for stills the results leave a lot to be desired but when I use it for movie clips the results are good

Re: Movies or Stills

I was in my local camera shop only last week and they said its what the pros want, I am holding back from upgrading because soon my brand will be replaced! by another model but I suspect with a movie mode on, I dont really want to buy an out of date model, but I dont want a movie feature on my camera either, perhaps its time to look at a Leica M9, this seems now the only company that takes notice of what their customers want!

I am not interested in the movie modes on stills cameras, but a movie mode would not stop me buying any particular Brand/Model. You don't actually have to use a particular mode just because it is present on the camera. Afterall, how many other features / modes / options are there available on your current camera that you do not use.

Re: Movies or Stills

Firstly the movie mode does not cost much because it is almost all software. Modern DSLR's already have live view and a powerful processor for those high resolution JPEG files. The one thing that might add a little cost is the built in microphone and sound recording. Personally, I would be happy if DSLR's did not have JPEG or Movies as you do not need all this processing for Raw. However, reality is that DSLR's have to cater for a wide range of requirements so we all have to accept that most cameras will have some features that we do not want.

I bought my 5D2 for still pictures and it is excellent and, while I did not want movies, it is included. I have used the movie mode just once in 4 months when attending my son's graduation and this was appreciated by other family members who could not be there. So there is no reason to let the existance of movies or not influence your choice for a still camera.

IF i wanted to take a video i would buy a bloody video camera.!!!!! why on earth would i want something thats a jack of all trades and master of none!?

Perhaps because many people (customers/consumers) are Jacks/Jills of all trades and masters of none, so the market follows them.

true but surely most people who go into DSLR useage are at least semi serious about photography......... i would have thought that jacks and jills are the ones that use the point and shoots............ where i can understand them ( to a point) wanting the ability to capture a few frames of moving images.

Re: Movies or Stills

I really don't understand the negative attitude taken by many towards camera's having a video feature, it costs next to nothing to add to the camera but for many would be a very handy thing to have!

Wedding / Event / Sports photogs are just the ones off the top of my head that I realise could (and already do) make excellent use of it.

I personally wouldn't mind having a Hi-Def video camera, but TBH I wouldn't want to drop the £500+ it would take to get a half decent one for only the odd time it would get used... to have the feature included (and giving excellent results) in a bit of kit I already had would be very welcome. It would also be one less thing to carry, which is even more welcome!

I'm sure most Canon 5D2 owners would strongly disagree with you here as their camera is one of the best single frame takers available today period, it just happens to do video aswell.... If a camera takes crap pictures in the first place it isn't going to be suddenly rectified by removing it's video feature!

Re: Movies or Stills

ok that was perhaps not the right comment but you knew what i meant! i appreciate that cameras like the 5D2 etc do take ex cellent images...... but seriously tho.......... why do u want a movie facility? surely a video camera offers a lot more in the way of options and controls etc as well as quality than a camera, its also designed shape wise to be easier to control etc................ im not sure a bride and groom would think it very professional if their videographer walked arond holding a camera! ? im sure i wouldnt be happy with it.
add to the fact that its just another something that can go wrong.;......... take a washer dryer....... something goes wrong with the drum when u are drying........... you lose washer AND dryer....... if you had them seperate you would still have a washer.
i havent been in any circumstances that i have been even remotely interested in shooting moving pictures.
ok i lie i did when i had my old camera and i shot my son doing something silly but that goes into the category of a point and shoot and a happy snapper rather than a serious/ semi serious photographer.
if the time ever comes that i will be looking to u pgrade, i appreciate that i wont have a choice in the matter. BUT it is because i dont have a choice that i will have to get a camera that has video function, rest assured the manual wont be even opened at that part. I dont mind what other people want or dont want. I do not want it on my camera .

Re: Movies or Stills

I have a couple of pretty good dedicated 1080P video cameras for when i want to take videos but if I don't have them but fancy taking a short clip of video I have to resort to low def from a compact. When I travel I end up leaving something out of my stills kit just to take a video cam for very little use. I'm getting a D300s to replace one D300 so when I travel i will leave the video camera at home and maybe take another lens. the rest of the time it lives in the boot of the car as a just in case camera so that means I will also have a just in case video camera as well.

Because they are the newer and more advanced cameras, the technology is now trickling down to the more entry level models though.
