My Return and a couple of Question!

Hi there Pixalo people!

I'm not sure if this is the right forum for this thread so I do apologize if it's not...

I joined this site this time last year and at the time was frequently posting and checking out forums, but I kind of got ushered into the world of IT by my parents and I kind of drifted from photography during this period unfortunately! - For a while I was doing IT out of pleasing the parents...

I DID have a Canon 450D with an 18-55mm and 55-250mm lens but at the time I was a bit stupid and sold these to buy a computer to further by abilities in IT at college, anyway enough of IT...

Well this has all begun to change, I've moved course (displeased my parents, but It's what I want to do so that's what matters) I'm now studying a BTeC Extended Diploma in Photography and Digital Imaging, I now have a part time job alongside that in which I am now using to save up to my a Canon 600D with 18-55mm (Kit Lens) and I want to get into photography full time and make a long, fruitful, enjoyable career out of it!

So I do apologize for my Inactivity and I wish to return as a fully functioning active member of the community, with many questions to aid me on my path to success!

So now to the questions I have now I'm back!

First of all can someone give me a quick run down of the benfits of lens hood? I've been trying to find some examples of images With and Without lens hoods but can't seem to find any good enough....

Also can someone show me lead me to some examples of filters? because I don't know hat CPL and FLD means...

Thankyou for any response and all help!

Many thanks, Liam

Re: My Return and a couple of Question!

Welcome back and good luck with the course

Lens hood: good for shielding the sun when shooting in it's general direction. Personally, I find it less useful for that than ensuring all the dogs don't mess up the front of the lens when they rush up to greet me - and helps keep the lens clear of rain, snow and hail!

CPL: circular polariser. Good for cutting down on water reflections, increasing saturation of a blue sky (at right angles to the sun) and reducing the shutter speed (2 stops) for waterfall shots. Personally, never use it to reduce reflections (I like reflections!) but often for saturating a blue sky and increasing exposure time on waterfalls

FLD: had no idea but Googled it! A filter to correct the effect of shooting fluorescent lighting. Personally, would never use as I shoot RAW and correct the White Balance (if required)

Re: My Return and a couple of Question!

Mark has pretty much nailed it Liam.

Lend hood will reduce flare when shooting with sunlight falling on the lens (unless you are pointing directly at the Sun), protects the lens from 90% of airbourne stuff and will offer protection to the lens if it comes into contact with solid objects.

The web sites of the major filter makers will tell you what the various filters will do.

Re: My Return and a couple of Question!

Thanks guys, I'm back where I was a couple years ago when I first started here, saving up for a camera (a better all round one now, the 600D) but I'm focusing on photography now, I found a filter set of 3 UV, FLD and CPL with a hard cover case for about £8 on amazon so I was going to buy that just as an Add on when I buy the Camera with Kit lens and a bag!

Re: My Return and a couple of Question!

I would just add that a lens hood is useful in any situation where you have a light source in front of the camera although not in frame. This includes studios as studio lighting is often in front of the camera. This helps to avoid camera flare which is not just the obvious blobs of light and streaks but flare can also just reduced contrast which may not be so obvious. Given that the lens hood can also help protect the lens, I always use them in all situations and all lenses (I have no reason to take them off).

Re: My Return and a couple of Question!

Additional useful tip, Lens hoods are also useful if you have a dodgy light source close at hand, such as Sun reflection in Windows to one side that could change the ambient light source....

Filters, I use Cokin, I have an adapter that allows me to slot them in in front of the lens, any filter is useful to have in the bag, as you never know when it will be used?....
Keep them in the hard case they came in, and keep a soft cloth for cleaning.
Some people have a constant Daylight filter attached in front of a lens to act as a guard against accidental damage to the main lens...
Replacing a lens is more expensive than a filter?...
