National Trust Gardens

I am planning/hoping to visit one of the local National Trust gardens at the weekend for some autumn colour. Wakehurst in particular is advertising the next couple of weekends as their 'Autumn Colour' weekends.

Now... I'm sure I read somewhere that tripods are not allowed by the NT - is this the case for all NT properties/gardens or in just specific cases?

Or did I dream it?

Re: National Trust Gardens

Is this the place;

Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew: Visitor Information

I would just drop them a quick email to advise if you can/can't use a tripod.

Look forward to seeing the shots

Re: National Trust Gardens

I'm an NT member and have never had problens with using tripods (except for all the people ). As a rule photography is not allowed in the houses and often they will ask you to check bags into the reception. I was once told off for having my camera over my shoulder in case it knocked over a priceless antique

Re: National Trust Gardens

Well, I visited some old pile out east somewhere (in Norfolk) and conversation at the entrance went:
"You can't use that tripod in here"
"It's not a tripod" (It was a monopod hanging, as it always does, on my bag)
"Well, whatever it is, you can't use it"
"It's a monopod and seeing as it's a bright and sunny day, I wasn't thinking of using it" (until you gave me the idea! I didn't, as it happens)

And, no, you won't find mention of it on any information page, but apparently it's a "rule". But we did sneak into Hardwick Hall (well, the grounds - with prices like theirs, who needs interiors of houses or gardens!) but we paid from through the car window, so they were none the wiser!

Yep - was thinking of Wakehurst, or perhaps Sheffield Park

I'll drop them a line.
It hadn't occured to me that tripods might not be allowed...

Re: National Trust Gardens

Both Wakehurst Place and Sheffield Park are fine for tripod use (be considerate to other visitors) and that photographs are not for used for commercial purposes.

Just need the weather to stay settled now!

Re: National Trust Gardens

Using tripods is becomming a problem in many places.
In some lighting conditions (i.e.Not miday sun) a tripod is essential.
They might as well say you can't take photos.

As for not taking pictures inside NT places hands up all those who have seen mobile phones and flashing in Places where taking photos (let alone flash) is not permitted.

One of the museums in Sheffield do not allow photogarphy but turn a blind eye to mobile (camera) phones as it is "too difficult to police"

Why would they allow cameras but not tripods?

I've come across this too, in Italy.

Seems they associate tripods with professionals, so are fearful of the images being used for commercial purposes.

But surely now professionals should be marked out with an IS or a VR

Quoted reason is usually that they obstruct the paths. When you ask about wheelchair access they say that they're OK. Health and Safety is another one

I've been asked if I was a pro a few times. Usually they want more money if you are (so I never am). Never have engaged anyone in a meaningful conversation on the subject.

After all if you're capable of taking a good picture, show that somewhere, then they get good publicity. If the pic becomes world famous they can always sue for their cut! But I guess the reality is they're terrified they're losing out on something!

Re: National Trust Gardens

I used to be an NT member. I seem to recall that it is possible to arrange private visits to take photos but presumably for a fee which may be OK if there are several involved.

Last Autumn the Camera Club arranged a visit to Woodchester Mansion (not NT) which is magnificent old building that was never finished. it is superb for photography and the Club had a free run for 3 hours or so one morning when it was not open to the public. We could use tripods and any equipment ( a good place for HDR). We were even allowed in some areas not open to the public. For this we paid an agreed donation to their restoration fund and they would be happy for us to return.
