Need a little favour regards CS4

Could someone with CS4 do me a little favour, preferably someone with a Canon camera.

Would you open one of your RAW photos, convert it to lab colour and then convert it back to RGB.

When I do it my picture goes darker and flat. I don't remeber it doing that before but I may have something set that I can't figure out.

I use lab colour to sharpen my pictures.

It doesn't help that I've found out my 5d2 has a hot red pixel and 2 white pixels at high ISO and long exposures, thankfully they dissapear when I open the photograph in CS4 so I'm not going to worry about them. Especially as I rarely use my camera's for long exposures.

Re: Need a little favour regards CS4

I have just done as you asked and my results don't show any change in brightness or perceived flatness. I used a RAW file from the 5D MK1 as the source file.

Re: Need a little favour regards CS4

Thanks I'll have to have a delve tonight into what the cause is. I'm not going to let a couple of dodgy pixels and this stop me from enjoying my 5D2.

I'm sure you mean the lightness channel for sharpening and not the a and b channels. I was tought that when alot of work has been done in lab that when taken back into rgb that there could be a slight change, and that is with colours. I have actions for lab sharpening and have never seen any changes unless it was done in the a and b channels..oh well my two cents.

Re: Need a little favour regards CS4

I did as you asked with a 5D2 Raw file and there was no visible difference converting. However, do remember that when you open the Raw image into CS4 it is first converted from Raw to a PS compatible format. You set this default setting in the Raw Converter bit depth and profile; mine is set to 16 bit Adobe RGB (1998).

I know sharpening in Lab mode used to be considered a good way of sharpening but things have moved on. Why not use smart sharpening which was introduced into CS3 and is very effective. Better still make the layer a smart object and then sharpening becomes non-destructive and you can change it for different outputs. Also use a layer mask so you only apply sharpening where needed. While I do think that this is the best method, I do not always follow it for reasons connected with laziness.

.
I've noticed a difference when going from sRGB to Adobe 1998, are you saying the profile on his camera is different from PS.

I also agree about smart sharpen,,,except I still use it on the lightness channel out of habit. I've never had to use a mask with smart sharpen, only when I have used unsharp mask or something like noiseninja. I like it when I try to keep up with new processing,,always changing as I still only have CS3

If we're talking about RAW images here, they don't have a colourspace prior to conversion.

Re: Need a little favour regards CS4

Quote In this RGB-to-Lab-to-RGB mode conversion). If you change the Mode pop-up menu to Luminosity and click OK it applies the sharpening to the luminance of the image only, not the color).

Surely if you only sharpen the luminance part of the file it must have affect on the file when converted back RGB .
My interpretation would be that aggressive sharpening in the Lab mode would result in some alteration to the brightness (depending on the scene, foliage especially) when viewing the file in RGB mode.?
Sharpening in the RGB and CMYK will affect the Luminance and Chrominance of the file.

Re: Need a little favour regards CS4

Thanks for the help and suggestions I appreciate it greatly.

Well after much faffing around and googling, goggling and occasionaly dribbling I found the reason for my problem.

When you install CS4 it gives you a warning message that you can use openGL commands with certain video cards but may need to update the driver to the latest version for them to work.
I had checked online that my ATI Radion X1650 1mb card was on the latest version of driver and so in performance settings within CS4 I enabled openGL mode.

It was that very thing that caused Lab Colour to do wierd things and darken my images. I have now disabled openGL in CS4 and the problem has gone away.

I don't really need the fandangly bits in CS4 so it will remain off. I have read up and it would seem that this is the cause of many odd things hapening like previewing prior to opening works but only a grey screen appears when the image opens.

So problem solved until the next one, again thanks for taking the time to try and help

Chris
